I KEEP TASTING FUCKING AMMONIA???? WHEN I BREATH THROUGH MY NOSE

It's supposedly a symptom of muscle loss, unfortunately. When your workouts are too long and your body starts using muscle for fuel, that happens. Not sure if just burning excess (dietary) protein can cause it as well...

Amonia smell is supposedly one of the signs of burning muscle. Maybe add just a little carbs (veggies) and see if it goes away?

Well, a quick search of google, and different people say you are either definitely burning muscle for energy, or you are eating too much protein. I wasn't able to find a definitive answer in my quick search - hopefully someone with some firm knowledge will speak up.

i was under the impression that the smell of ammonia was a sign of dehydration as well.

It usually stems from a kidney problem. The body is trying to rid itself of excess acetone. could be ketoacidosis, but probably not.

usually it's just from eating certain foods. If you're taking a lot of vitamin supps, that could also cause it.

just a thought.

well, if it's a problem with diabetes, it'll somewhat of a fruity smell, which is sometimes like ammonia.

I'm going to go with excessive protein powders and vitamin supps.

It's probably just your diet, maybe increase your fluids a bit to help the kidneys clear it more effciently and get some breath mints.

I noticed when I was on on super high Protein low carb diet that after training my Gi would knock your fuckin head off with the smell of amonia. I figured it was because I wasn't consuming enuff water. I went up to 6 liters on hard training day's and it went away.

I drink about 2 gallons of water a day and still experience an ammonia smelling body odor, Presser. It's not dehydration. It's caused from a process called "deamination." This occurs when the body breaks off the amino group from the amino acid and converts it to NH3 (ammonia). The ammonia is excreted through urine and perspiration.

Basically, you're burning protein for fuel instead of glucose, glycogen, etc. I experience this frequently. It doesn't necessarily mean that you're breaking down muscle tissue for fuel, just that you're catabolizing protein.

I always sweat a ton during every workout, but I only smell like ammonia when I take yohimbe before I workout. It makes me STINK like ammonia. Does this mean I am burning muscle or protein? I was under the impression that yohimbe helps free up fat and burn it, but if i'm burning muscle i better quit. anyone have any info?????????

imho it's the ketones.
You are on low carb high protein diet and burning protein and fatty acids for fuel.
Do you use ketostix to test your urine for ketones? Do you use a glucose tester to check your blood sugar level? You can get a much better picture of what's going on in your body if you have these tools.

I have those tools, but haven't used them in a while since I was on the Bodyopus diet. Right now I am eating carbs, but not that many, so I figured I wouldn't be in ketosis... Next time I smell that ammonia I will whip out some of my ketostix and see what's up... Thanks for the input bros...

My girlfriend keeps tasting ammonia and even has small attacks where it overwhelms her. I saw that L-arginine helps with excess ammonia (from GNC). Is this true?

she just needs to eat some carbs, unless she is dietig for a show, but still its not good to stay in ketosis all that long.

She must have a different issue because she over eats the carb catagory. She doesn't exercize or do shows, so maybe this isn't the right forum, but I was just searching for medical issues related to "tasting ammonia". It's been going on for months. At 24 years old I didn't think it is liver disease like my searches are returning.
