I know a lot of guys here have played football, had a question about a rule.

In a pick up game it was 4th & 1. The qb pitches the ball weak side to the rb, the ball bounces off his chest, he bobbles it in his hands it goes out of bounds right at the first marker, he goes out of bounds before the marker. He never got control, they said the ball was fumbled out of bounds at the first marker so first down, it was very close, I was saying no way turn over on downs.

Who was right? I don't think that call is right, you could just hand off to the rb, he could "fumble" and just chuck the ball out of bounds over the first down marker, and first down every time.

So who was right?

yup if its fumbled uits marked where the ball goes out and last team to touch the ball

So the way the rule is written, you could pitch back, and fumble out of bounds to pick up a first, I am suprised that coachs haven't came up with a play to use this to their advantage.

But in the rule book it also states ur not allowed to fumble the ball out on perpose. Like toss it forward. But if you fumble it, and it rolls out infront of u, then its where the ball went out at

I guess I was not too clear the guy was bobbling the ball in his hands after it bounced off his chest, and kind of threw the ball at the first down cone out of bounds instead of trying to gain control, he intentionally bobbled it out of bounds. So what he did was illegal right?

You didn't mention if the ball was pitched forward or not. If it does not go forward, it was a fumble. If it went forward it was an incomplete pass. In any event, as FBCat said, if it is intentionally fumbled, it is a penalty. Turn over on downs...first down!

I believe in a pitch to the rb it be considered a fumble even if it hits no one. so if it was pitched the the running back and he never had possesion and the ball went out of bounds far enough downfield to be a first down then it would be a first.

all wrong-the ball cannot be fumbled forward-NFL rules digest states:A ball fumbled forward out of bounds returns to the team that fumbled at the spot of the fumble!!-Your situation Harvey you were correct-change of possession on downs!!

A fumble cannot result in + yardage if it goes out of bounds. 1st down going the other way.
