Bad week just got worse.

Hardly a Newbie
Well i was benching, and when i got my final 8 reps, my shoulder hurt. Well now when i put my arm above my head it hurts.

Anyone got any ideas what it might be, im gonna take the next week off.

Could be alot of things bro. I just had x-rays and an MRI on my shoulder. It turned out to be tendonitis, a ripped bicep and some minor tears in my delts. It's really to complex to guess. If it's minor, some time off is good enough to fix it. If it's not, then taking time off or going light for a few weeks might push you over the edge and make something even more difficult to repair and give you a longer recovery time. If it still hurts in a week, go get some pictures taken of it so you can minimize your down time.

Unfortunately

The bench press often causes this type of energy as it overloads frontal delts. I recently heard Dave Draper state the same and state he only uses dumbbells for chest.

I have had this problem for many years but it usually only occurs with heavy benches...three or fewer rep sets.

Stay with lighter weight and higher reps on this exercise or switch to others for chest. Dips aggravate my sternum area so I use machines or dumbbells.

Ditto on the straining of the front delts, I've also read that you'll sometimes feel delt strains in your lower biceps and elbow. Used to happen to me all the time, now I warm up for a longer period of time and make sure to do rotator cuff warm-ups just to be safe.

Well its real sore when i put my arms over my head, and when i put my arm on top of the door and lean forward. it feels like the back delt.

I guess no bench of military for a week, and try later.

Only problem is im about to get back on the team.

take a couple days of rest bro...trust me....I tore a tendon in my shoulder ouch!!! and I continued to work out on it....but u have to be careful...

Damn, that sucks. Hope you get better quickly. I screwed up my thumb pretty bad, and my shoulder a little bit on saturday playing football. I was lucky I didn't separate my shoulder, just feels like a little strain, but I'm amazed how much screwing up my thumb/hand (got my thumb bent back, and my hand is all swollen and bruised) messes with my lifting. For the shoulder, be really easy on it because you don't want to make it worse.

Well i just got back from the doc, she said i strained my Rotator cuff. So im taking this week off, maybe just kill my legs this week.

could very well be a minor muscle strain. the rear delt is where the rotator cuff complex is located. you have a bunch of stabalizing muscles back there including the rhomboids, teres major and minor, and finally the supraspinatus and infraspinatus. these small and vulnerable muscles can easily be damaged if improper technique or other variables occur. be sure to take all of the proper procedures to attempt a quick recovery such as stretching, warming up, and of course the RICE technique (Rest Ice Compression Elevation).
