Do You Need Human Growth Hormone? (by Phillip C Saint-Erne, MD)

...Together with testosterone and insulin, human growth hormone is the supreme anabolic agent in man. There is no doubt adequate growth hormone is critical for normal maturation and growth, but how does diminishing growth hormone effect vitality as we age?

...Recently, some 4,000 physicians, in an organization called A4M, collectively published articles and books to the effect that reduced production of "human growth hormone" (HGH) is one of the primary causes of aging and decreased functioning of our major organs.

...Furthermore, they believe, returning the production levels of this hormone back to those levels associated with our youth can bring about a dramatic increase in health and vitality.

...The New England Journal of Medicine, and numerous other journals, have stated that HGH replacement therapy may reverse some of the effects of human aging by restoring muscle growth, decreasing body fat, restoring hair loss and color and increasing stamina and endurance. Additionally, HGH is thought to improve sexual function, cholesterol profile, memory, normalize blood pressure, improve immune functions, foster a quicker resolution of injuries, and reverse the shrinkage of major organs associated with aging.

...HGH is a prescription medicine and should be taken in conjunction with the consultation of a physician practicing endocrine medicine in association with hormonal changes in aging that may detrimentally affect health and happiness.

...Typically, one of my patients would have a blood screening to determine his current HGH level. If needed, I start a patient typically, at a dosage of 7-14 IU/week as 1-2 IU/day. After thirty days another blood screening will help to determine if this dosage is sufficient.

GROWTH HORMONE BACKGROUND

...From conception, hormones, which are produced by the endocrine glands, serve as messengers from your brain, telling your internal organs how to function. A decrease in the production of hormones begins in middle age and continues to diminish in a linear fashion until old age.

...But now, perhaps the "ultimate in preventative medicine technology" has been realized:

...Insufficiency of hormone has been discovered to be a major element in the process of aging.

...The NIA (National Institute of Aging) has asked several major US universities to study this phenomenon. Research from around the world during the past five years has led the NIA to realize the tremendous benefits of hormone replacement therapy.

...The emphasis of medicine has always been to diagnose and treat a disease process. Unfortunately, many of the disease processes, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer and Alzheimer's disease, have been blamed on the "natural" process of aging. Traditional medicine has never treated aging as a disease process. Now we can look at aging as a significant factor in disease formation and attempt to prevent the symptoms of aging by treating aging as a disease in itself. We now have begun to change our thinking that it is automatic to deteriorate with age, at various stages. Fortunately, we now know that much of the deterioration of aging is preventable, or at least, the processes can be slowed.

...Perhaps this new "gestalt" of treating age more or less as a disease first started in 1991 based on studies by an endocrinologist at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Daniel Rudman. Dr. Rudman studied hormone replacement in older men, (61-81) the results of which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Rudman stated to the effect that it appeared that HGH could reverse 10 to 20 years of the aging process in older men as fat diminished, muscle tissue and strength increased.

...Thus Dr. Rudman's study revealed solid research possibly supporting the fact that hormonal decline itself might be a primary, major cause of aging. It may follow then, that providing the aging body with additional human growth hormone can reverse or certainly slow many of the symptoms of the aging process.

SCIENCE ADDS MORE

...Other scientists have realized the importance of supplementation of other hormones. Scientists at the Gerontology Research Center of the National Institute of Health in Baltimore, Maryland, are working with other researchers to examine the role that reduced sex hormones play in age related disturbances, including musculoskeletal function, body composition and metabolic function.

...Combining hormone replacement therapy to return growth hormone and sex hormone levels to levels typical for younger people has shown additive or synergistic effects. Physical and psychological function is improved, including improvement in cardiovascular function, improved cholesterol levels, increased lean body mass, and improved muscle strength and fitness.

...Remember that hormones are tiny, chemical messengers continuously secreted into the bloodstream by endocrine glands to regulate activities of vital organs. Hormones stimulate a multitude of life-giving processes throughout the body that maintain health, harmony, growth, healing and repair.

...Probably the most well known hormone is insulin, which is secreted by the pancreas. Before the development of the production and administration of insulin, many people died as a result of diabetes or had severe debilitating illnesses. Once scientists were able to synthesize insulin, the severe changes associated with diabetes were reversed, or at least slowed, for a much longer period of time.

...Genetic engineering has now enabled endocrinologists to synthesize many of the natural hormones found in our bodies. This significant advancement in the ability to synthesize our hormones has lead to endocrinology research into the correction of the deficiency of hormones that contributes to our aging decline.

...It is the operation of the endocrine system that allows the central nervous systems to communicate with every cell in the body. Hormone deficiencies affect every cell in the body and result in degenerative changes and the aging process, as well as symptoms of aging. However, if you bring hormone levels back to a level at age 25, you actually reverse many of the unfavorable effects that begin to appear as we age.

MORE ON GROWTH HORMONE

...Growth hormone (HGH) is secreted by the pituitary gland and is taken into the liver and converted into a protein called somatomedin C or IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-one). It is IGF-1 that is partially responsible for the growth hormone functions in the body. Growth hormone contributes to ongoing tissue repair, healing. Cell rejuvenation; bone strength, brain function, enzyme production, and the integrity of hair, nails and skin.

...The signs of growth hormone deficiency are the same as the signs of aging. Body composition shifts with an increase in fat and body weight and a decrease in muscle mass and energy. There is a decrease in bone mineralization, vitality ebbs, and there is increased cardiovascular disease and mortality. There are also psychosocial deficits and impaired physical performance, poor sleep and decreased social interaction…ugh, not a real good situation.

...Research indicates that supplementation of growth hormone and testosterone may reverse symptoms of the aging process and restore a more youthful physiology and condition. There is a consistent improvement in muscle/fat ratio. (Most studies show a 10 to 20% decrease in fat with a 10% increase in muscle). Even more with testosterone.

...There is also increased lipolysis or breakdown of fat with the concomitant decrease in cholesterol and triglycerides. There is an increase in exercise capacity, bone density, muscle mass and strength and there is an increase in cardiac output, skin rejuvenation with an increase in collagen and elastin, and a significant improvement in immunity. This results in growth hormone's anticancer and longevity effect...sounds pretty good huh?

QUESTIONS ABOUT MY HORMONE REPLACEMENT PROGRAMS

1. WHY DOES TESTOSTERONE AND HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE HAVE TO BE INJECTED?

...Testosterone to those deficient, or with a disturbed pituitary-testicle loop, causing low libido, drive and energy, can now be administered through skin patches although injections are more potent and still probably, on balance, more effective. Testosterone is difficult to administer orally, although it can be through methylation, but it causes more potential liver toxicity.

...HGH is a polypeptide protein, just like many foods that we eat. If growth hormone were taken by mouth as a pill or a solution your stomach acid and enzymes would digest it. The protein would be broken down and destroyed. So far, the best available double-blind evidence suggests there are no viable ways to administer HGH other than by injection, despite claims otherwise. When you inject HGH just below the skin, it enters your body without going through the stomach and being "digested." Getting an injection is the only way the active growth hormone can safely enter your system and do its magic.

2. IS THE INJECTION PAINFUL?

...No, only a small amount of HGH is delivered each injection making the injection volume very small. We use the thinnest needle possible so you will experience a quick and easy injection with almost no discomfort. It's no more inconvenient than taking a daily vitamin.

3. WHERE ON THE BODY SHOULD THE INJECTION BE GIVEN?

...Any muscle or fatty area works. Most often injections are given in the thigh, shoulder or the abdomen. Be sure to hold pressure at the injection site immediately after the shot for about 30 seconds to avoid any bruising.

4. WHAT DO I DO IF I FORGET TO TAKE A SHOT?

...If you miss a dose you just get back on schedule the next day. You will not suffer any problems by NOT taking it. It will just delay or reduce the benefits.

NOTES: FROM THE A4M — WHY USE HGH?

...People who have taken Human Growth Hormone have found it to produce striking improvements in their health, energy level and sense of well being. The list of benefits seems to grow with each new study. In his book, Stopping the Clock, Ronald M. Klatz, M.D., President of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), summarizes the results of most GH studies, as follows:

...Typically, one of my patients would have a blood screening to determine his current HGH level. If needed, I start a patient typically, at a dosage of 7-14 IU/week as 1-2 IU/day. After thirty days another blood screening will help to determine if this dosage is sufficient.

...Human Growth Hormone benefits now include:

Younger, thicker skin
Stronger bones
An average gain of 8.8% in muscle mass after six months without exer- sise
An average loss of 14.4% body fat after six months without dieting
A stronger immune system

WHAT IS HGH?

...Growth Hormone (GH) is the master hormone because it is released by the master gland, the anterior pituitary gland. While GH is not necessary or critical to one’s survival it seems to play an important evolutionary role in human development. During puberty the GH levels dictate a person’s height and bone size. After puberty GH continues to help regulate the body's metabolism.

...What does Growth Hormone do in the body? Metabolically speaking in part, GH is responsible for the regulation of insulin (glucose metabolism), protein synthesis, transportation of amino acids across cell membranes, regulation of IGF-a (insulin-like growth factor-1, a metabolic liver hormone) and IGF-2 production - known to be one of the primary hormones responsible for cognitive development and IQ in children. IGF-2 is the growth factor that stimulates brain cell growth and development.

...Between the ages of 20 and 25, GH production begins a steady decline, and research associates this with the phenomena called aging. Somatopause (Soma = GH) is the term used to describe this condition.

...The human brain shrinks in size by so much as 30% by the time we die as do other vital organs. In theory much of this is due to the dramatic drop in the production of somatomedins (growth factors with age which in turn are regulated by GH. When the psychological domain levels drop mood levels become less stable and the feeling of youthful resilience (the ability to "bounce back") diminishes.

GROWTH HORMONE INJECTIONS

...GH is one of the most extensively researched hormones in the body. Anti-aging specialists focus on its ability to regenerate kidney, lung, heart and liver tissue. The majority of GH research has focused on its clinical application at injectable dosage levels (from 1 to 2 I.U.s). However, new research is now surfacing regarding the effects of micro-dilution supplementation on quality of life.
