Need your knowledge bro...
I've been wanting to learn to fight for a long time - real life street fighting stuff, stuff that will matter in a bar or on the sidewalk if someone attacks me. I don't go looking for fights, but since I've put on some size it seems like they're starting to come to me, and one of these days taking the high road and walking away ain't gonna work.

Where do I start?
What kind of fighting gyms should I look for?
What style should I be looking for?
How much should I pay for this kind of training?

Thanks man,
46

Where are you, that is first off.

Your location means alot as far as what effective styles are available to you. Idealy you need to learn a good standup style i/e Muai Thai or Boxing and a good ground work i/e Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or wrestling. Judo is also awesome to compliment either of those two combinations.
So what I am saying is try to find a Muai Thai or boxing school to learn standup fighting. Train this at least twice a week to become proficient enuff for normal street confrontation. Then you add at least 2 day's a week of the groundfighting of your choice, because a large % of street altercations end up on the ground, you want to be able to discard of your opponent and get the fuck out of there with a quickness.
Never willingly go to the ground in a street fight, to many variables i/e his friends stomping your ass, weapons whatever.
I can never say this enuff AVOID A STREET FIGHT WITH ALL and EVERY POSSIBLE MEANS AVAILABLE TO YOU. There is never a winner. I believe you need to be prepared but avoid at all costs. Even if you win you willbe encarserated, sued, or persued by 30 of his friends one day when you thought it was over.

Thanks for your input bro.
I'm in Portland, OR. Know of any good places for a beginner out here?
Muai Thai, then moving on to some grappling was what I had in mind. I agree with you 101% on your last point, I'm a law student and I simply can't afford to get in any trouble or I may not be admitted to the bar when I graduate. From a legal standpoint, you're exactly right, even if it's self-defense many courts will convict you if you had the opportunity to retreat safely and didn't take it.
That said, I have no experience fighting, and I'd like to get a little technique under my belt, and get used to some contact, so I don't freeze up if I'm ever in a self-defense (or defense of others) situation.

Give me till tomorrow I will make a call, we will get you set up somewhere good, I know there is a good school there but it escapes me now. I think maybe Matt Hume trains there, He is top notch and has students in every big fighting event out there. I'll find out for sure.

The better they are, the better your chances of getting quality instruction. One thing I learned is every "Real Guy" in this sport (for lack of better term) takes the time to nurture newbies and gradually turn them to beasts. If someone abuses the new meat then they are not worth shit. There are assholes like that out there I am sure, but I promise if I recommend someone you will be in great hands.

I'll check for you Delt, Texas is loaded with bad asses. I am 90% sure Guy Mezger (lions den) has a school in austin. He is an incredible fighter and teacher. I'l find out for sure and get back to you asap.

Hey bro. I am in Dallas. There is a guy called master Ron in North Dallas but he is expensive. I have looked into it and I am very interested. Have you heard of him? Can you check it out for me? Thanks.

Hey 46 research Krav Mega. It focuses more on self defense and real life situations than the more traditional martial arts. It might be more like what your looking for.

Krav Magna is a good art. The problam lies in trying to find a suitable teacher. It is the martial art taught to the Isrealy (sp?) special forces. There a a bunch of yahoo's that took 2 classes under a real teacher and are trying to cash in on suckers.

As a rule I would stay away from anyone calling themselves Master. Most of the stuff they teach, although good for conditioning could get yo hurt in a real life situation.
All that Kungfudoooloomeing Highya Karate shit is a rip.

Rooster in Kansas City you are all set. Call 913-895-6504 his name Braeson. He is a kick ass BJJ guy from what I hear, some of my instructors go out there at least 4 times a year doing seminars, you are set.

Hostile In Dallas you are also set. Call information and get the # for Machado Bros. BJJ. That is a top of the food chain school, the Machado's are the cousins of the Gracie's, they all kick ass. Carlos Machado himself is the head instructor there, you can't go wrong.

Hope this helps

Tons of stretching, your body adapts bro. I was thicker last summer (mostly because I have been clean scince august) and I want to stay around 235-240. I was about 255 in that pic and it did hinder my performance. 20 minutes stretching every morning and then again after working out.

Hostile- I read in an interview one of the Machado Bros said-

The ground is my heaven
The mat is my temple
Jiu Jitsu is my Religion

another one said - I am a great white shark, the ground is my ocean and most people on earth can not swim.

food for thought from the Machado's- LOL.
