how do you know what you are getting

when making your own gear from powders how do you know what you are getting? Is there a good way to test the powder....I hear something about methanol or something but dont know to much..

you can do heat tests, check out harvey's thread on the melting temps of powders.

melting point tests are good... and you can read the physical descriptions to compare against what you have

You can tell your source that you know a chemist who will test the powder. That will scare the source, so he/she will not send you detergent.
