Well today during a set of bench the bar slipped out of my hand at the top of the rep and fell to my chest breaking my 5th rib on my right side....Hurts like a mofo but I got some good drugs...

man that sounds painful, I hate broken bones.I'm still waiting for my last break to heal up, so I can go really heavy again.
hope u have a speedy recovery bro.

Hope you feel better soon, ribs can be a muther when you break them. They are always moving when u breath so you always feel it.  :(

damn, those broken rib injuries suck. Usually stable enough in 4 weeks to do most things,in the meantime it's a great excuse for skipping cardio.    :D   Hope you heal up fast bro.

ouch, I can just imagine the pain.  Not to mention the embarassment at the gym.  Did you have a lot of weight on there?  I hope you have a fast recovery bro.

Oh FUCK!  I've thought about how bad that would hurt and what exactly would get fucked up in the process.  I guess you are actually luck that you only broke the ribs.  It could have ruptured organs like your spleen or lungs.

Wish you fast recovery...I use an open grip on my bench and ive had that shit drop on me before but luckly it wasnt that much. On heavy weight I have to have someone spot me very close so I dont drop it. Scares the shit out of everyone..but I get so much better of a push when I use it.

good luck recovering bro, send some of them pain killers my way, i got, uhhhhhh, a bad back, yeah thats it, a bad back.lol.

a dude at my gym dropped 400lbs on his neck a couple of years ago.  he broke something, and couldnt speak for a month. bet that hurt a bit too.

It was 185..I use a thumbless grip on almost every pushing exercise..i was doing speed presses the idea is doing 10 sets of 3 reps with 30 second rest periods..when I was on set # 6 rep three the bar slipped out of my right hand on the top of the rep so it was a free fall to my rib cage..I am glad hat I exhale on the push imagine if I was holding my breath...lol

Thumbless grips are dangerous, as you know now from firsthand experience.  There is no benefit from using them as opposed to the standard grip, just count your blessings that you weren't maxing out.  using chalk couldn't hurt either.

Sorry to hear that man.  I used the thumbless grip for a long time too.  About 4mths ago I started working out with a buddy of mine every once in a while.  The first time we did a chest workout and I got him to spot me I asked him to help me up on the first one.  I was using the thumbless grip and when he lifted he twisted the bar.  I was about 1/2 a millimeter from having the whole 225 on my chest.  Scary.  No more thumbless grip for me either.

Get well soon bro.
