Hey,

Just wondering how often everyone works abs...last summer I did them pretty much everyday, and they looked good, but it made it so my stomach almost stood out too much...right now I am just doing them every few days.

Once a week. I only work abs to shield the stomach for boxing. I find excercising abs too boring to do much.

I work them atleast every other day, but I would like to here more testimonials because this board has the most impressive members pics section of any I visit.  A lot of you guys have the abs kickin.  I wonder sometimes if I'm over working them?  Napalm, Presser, whats the deal?

3x per week,  1 30 rep set of some sort of weighted crunch makes for a great full body warm-up.  Gets the blood flowing.

Ok, Here's my take on it. Abs are mainly made up of "fast twitch fibers" (just like bi's, legs, chest, etc) I think you would be overtraining them if you doing them EOD. And sure pumping 50 reps might make them burn but it doesn't "mamximize" development of the muscles. You wouldn't go and pick up 10lb dumbells and curl 50 reps and expect to build better bi's would you? I train my abs like any other muscle group. Using both low and moderately high reps and overload the muscles so the abs develop. Ususally once a week. Like Presser said, thay also get worked during other exercises as well. (squats etc.) But no matter how great your training is, if you aren't lean, you won't see them. So proper diet and training I think are the key.

good post macgyver... I hit them 2x/week, except now I'm doing them 3x/wk.  If you overwork them, they WILL get big and bulge out the wrong way.  I strongly recommend doing suctions to train these muscles more inward than outward.  I vary the exercises on each workout, but like doing hanging crunches at all angles, weighted cable crunches, and various types of side crunches.  I focus on squeezing the muscles and holding to build separation.  Although watch overtraining on the sides as the obliques can be prone to bulging out with alot of work.  They can hang out like love handles, but still be solid as a rock.

got a few PM's to clarify suctions:

in between ab exercises, suck your stomach muscles inward like you are trying to make your bellybutton suck all the way back into your spine.  Pull the abs in and hold until failure.  DOing this over time will help you get great control of your abs and train them NOT to bulge out.

In the old days of bodybuilding, suction poses to show off the abs were a little more common.  Not too many guys do them well anymore...possibly all the GH has most pros with swollen internal organs.
