View Full Version : pump pain

With exercises that need a firm grip… such as back or biceps exercises… I always get an enormous pump in my forearms. Much more than any other pump I have in the rest of my body.
They get hard, extremely hard, like hard as a rock. This hurts so much I sometimes have to quit biceps and back training early.

Can the pump itself cause this pain and how? And what can I do about it?

I tried some ibuprofen but that doesn’t seem to stop the pain, so it’s apparently not the muscle itself that is hurting, since ibuprofen work really well for me when it comes to muscle pain.

I tried resting more between sets but that doesn’t do much either and I can’t rest 15’ between every set. I can lower weight but then I leave my back quite untrained.

And usualy after training is over and the swelling goes away… I get painfull wrists.

Can anyone help?

Have you tried stretching your forearms? Lace your fingers together and push your palms away from you. That's what I do.

I had the same problem, went to the Dr, he decided it was pressure on one of the nerves, he said to stop lifting, i said no!!!

Like presser said it seems to come and go

I got one of the captain of crunch grippers and using them once a week seemed to help the problem, I also switched from curling with the straight bar to using the bent ez curl bar for a few weeks

A friend pointed out that I bend my wrist a little bit on a few exercises (bad habbit i guess) I now make sure my wrist is always flat. And as much as I hate them you might want to try straps for the lifts that cause pain.

I could compare it more with an erection. :D

Blood rushes in, it swells up, gets hard, an stays that way until blood goes out again... which it doesn't during training.

Maybe my hyper-mobile joints are just too weak, as the doc says. But I just can't except that.

Whatya on? I got that from dbol. But mostly in the calves and lowerback. Only slightly in the forearems. I started using straps on back day just to keep the forarms from exploding! It felt like they were in a contraction at my max weight but stuck like that even when I put the weight down. Unfortunately, with the dbol, even light weights would do that to me.

I am on test and primo. But I must say I get this feeling also when I am off.

Does anyone know anything about increased blood volume?

How about when you train back you use lifting straps to take some of the tension of your grip?? It has it pro's and con's I guess but maybe it can help?

I'm afraid if I do so my grip will fall back even more. I also don't think they are that handy. But I might dig them up again and give them a try. There must a a different cause for this however and thus a diffrent answer.
