I always use the coffee filter but feel like I'm losing something by doing it.....shit get stuck to the paper...some just refuses to drain at all. I don't know......seems to me that just keep an extra filter or too would do the trick.
I have done it both ways and the coffee filter step is the way to go. There is less potential for loss in the sludge at the bottom and final filtering is easier.

I'm going to make my own batch in the next day or two, Do you guys use the coffee filter right after the pellets are dissolved before the syringe filter?
I'll have to try the coffee filter step, let me know when you peeps use it.
now coffee filter.. Best is to get as much of the good stuff off the top and coffee filter that first all the way through, then just pour the rest of the gunk in the coffee filter and filter it.
even if i let it sit coffee filtering makes it much easier, but now i dont do that anymore, i try to avoid loss as much as poss. just let it sit for couple days and its not bad.
I ordered a few extra filters so in case I clogged one I would be ok.. this is what I did with my last 6g kit. Mixed pellets and oil as usual and let it sit for a few hours. Then filtered the clear upper layer through the watman without coffee filtering and coffee filtered the sludge before filtering that through the watman. It worked just fine and saved a lot of time.. golden and crystal clear and didnt really wait for the sludge to filter .... gently squeezed it through the coffee filter
I just finished my first batch of fina. 4g kit from finakits. I used notacow's conversion. No coffee filter. I did let it sit for 24 hours though and I heated it. It came out perfect.
