OK guys, last night my computer worked fine....well this morning I turn everything on and the only thing that shows is my wall-background? None of my program icons show or does my menu bar located at the bottom?? I had to access my task manager to get on the net, but sometimes when I bring it up it only stays up for like 2secs then closes??? WTF How can I get my icons to show when my computer turns on like before??? Need some help plz

What operating system are you using? The first thing to try would be to log off (and/or reboot) and log back in and see if things are fine.

I've got windows xp! Tried that 5 or 6 times now and still the same...bout to try again with something different! Just hope I'll be able to access the net again, it's becoming a pain in the butt!

If you have a home version of Windows, a restart will fix most problems.

Also press Ctrl, Atl, Del and see if any of the programs say (not responding) beside them.

Also run scan disk if you can.

Don't have XP on any of my machines, but usually all the icons and things are stored in "desktop" directory associated with your login on windows machines. On win2k, it'd be something like:
\Documents and Settings\[login]\Desktop\

You can see if everything is ok with that.

When I enter ctrl, alt del...it pops up then dissappears quick? It will not stay up longer enough to access.... something is stuck too, my mouse keeps clicking on items or highlighting things that I don't want too...

Definitely sounds like time for a reboot. You can power your system off, and unplug and replug in your mouse and keyboard.

Definitely run scan disk - something could have gotten corrupted (my user hive got corrupted on my laptop, and ugly things started happening).

from http://www.infopackets.com/computer+questions/windows+xp+scandisk.htm

Where is scandisk for Windows XP?

Lots of people are wondering what happened to the ScanDisk utility for Windows XP. If you didn't know, ScanDisk is used to check your hard drive for errors. Quite often, ScanDisk needs to run if Windows is shut down improperly.

To check your drive for errors with Windows XP: double-click My computer. Next, right-click on the disk you want to check and select "Properties" from the options menu. Now, choose the Tools menu option. There you will find the Error-checking utility. Click the "Check Now" button to begin checking your hard disk for errors.

If you like to use the command prompt, the equivalent command for ScanDisk is "chkdsk".

Did it come with XP or is it an upgrade version?

sounds like you have a key stuck. Shut your computer down, then run your fingers across your keyboard several times to try an unstick the key.

turn your machine back on and see if it works

Can you click on the start menu? If so click it then go the programs then Accessories then go to system tools then click system restore. Then follow the instructions on restoring your computer to an earlier time. Try to go back a day or so.

I'm don't think but I'm not 100% sure. That home version is shit though. If he has the proffesional it should fix itself but not sure what the problem is. Another thing did you install it fresh or install over the other OS (operating system).

I'm trying to find what would cause this and I'm not having any luck. That's why I recommend system restore. That has saved my ass many times. If it doesn't work I will try and find a fix for it.

Well if he installed over another operating system his files are probably conflicting. I'm trying to look also but no luck yet.

See Windows XP was already installed as the operating system! Compaq Tech. Support kept teeling me to change and select the "Last known Configuration" which to do is press F8 while system is booting up and enter once shown! I did that and no go! I still can not bring anything up when my system boots....No program icons show or my menu bar located at the bottom, All you see is my background!
Another thing is that my sound doesn't work at all right now, and I keep getting messages about screensaver not functioning properly too...oh yeah mouse will highlight & click on items without me doing so!
ANYONE HERE WORK FOR COMPAQ???

I know now what the problem is :( The night before I recieved an email and before i actually looked at it i downloaded to my comp! Think it's a virus...that's causing all the probs! Suks, but hopefully my quick restore disk will redo everything and I should be going good later this evening!

Explorer is not running or corrupted.

Try typing "explorer" in New Task in Task Manager.
If works:
Explorer not running at startup. Check the following registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Shell needs to = Explorer.exe
Userinit needs to = C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

If not work:

If you can find a good copy of explorer on your CD or in a Cab, you may be able
to replace it using Safe Mode with Command Prompt. But more likely, you will have
to do a System Restore, or repair/reinstall Windows from the CD to fix this.

Sounds like you make have to do a system restore.

If you don't have a virus protector, Invest in one. They are relatively inexpensive, Norton Anit Virus is Cool. If your running off a DSL use a firewall as well.

Once you get XP back do a system save and make a boot disk, might help in the future.

make another user so you can get back in if it happens agian. Ive got a few viruses that have attached themselves to my user. So I go in as the other user and delete the bad one. Then make another user to replace the one you delete.
