Speaking to OBSERVER media yesterday, Jonas gave the public the assurance that everything is in place for the much anticipated National Championships.
“This is the 49th Annual Bodybuilding Championship. It’s the one show that we have during the year and one of the nicest shows out there. You know you will get your money’s worth.
“I don’t want people to be disappointed, so I want you to come out in your numbers. Get your tickets in advance from Lifetime Gym, Torturer, National Fitness, Extreme Fitness, the Antigua Athletic Club or any committee member,” Jonas said.
According to Jonas, there was a record number of athletes who registered for the championship last year, but based on confirmed competitors to date, this number has been surpassed.
She also highlighted some of the competitors that will be battling for the National Bodybuilding title, which arguably, is one of the fiercest categories contested every year.
“Quite a number of athletes have registered this year. This is the first time we have 48 athletes. Last year we broke the record with 40. We had 49 initially, but sadly one competitor had to withdraw due to injury.
“In the Bodybuilding division we have Alfred Allen, Alfred Jarvis, Cleofoster Daniel, Brandon Phillip, Elvis Bailey, Frankie Brown the veteran, who’s making a return to competitive bodybuilding after an extended break, and Kenny Jacobs, the reigning National Champion,” she added.
The other traditional categories that will be on show are the Men’s Bodybuilding Masters, Female Physique, Body Fitness, Men’s Physique, Bodybuilding Juniors, the Bikini segment and the introductory Men’s Physique Juniors.
Kimberley Ephraim will be defending her Bikini title, but Rosian Warrington will not be competing this year in the Body Fitness category, since she earned her Pro-card last year, and is no longer eligible to compete in an amateur championship.
Citing overcrowding issues in the past, Jonas said the Federation will only be catering for 600 patrons this year, and tickets from the various gyms can only be purchased in advance.
“Since last year was very uncomfortable, we made a decision to cater for only 600 persons this year, so we’re asking persons to use the official ticket outlets to get their tickets early at a cost of $60, because we won’t be selling any tickets on the night of the show,” she remarked.
The National Championship will be staged at the Royal Antiguan Hotel on August 27 starting at 7pm.
Jonas thanked all the corporate sponsors who have willingly partnered with the Federation to make this year’s show a reality.
