The Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (BBFF) National Championships were the talk of the town this past weekend in the nation’s capital.

If you missed it live on television, 67 of the nation’s top bodybuilding competitors took to the stage at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort.

Letting their gains do the talking, 19 competitors out of Grand Bahama went into Nassau with 13 Grand Bahamians walking away as division winners and seven of those 13 were crowned as overall champions.

Julia Mellor was the only competitor in the Women’s Fitness Category, making her the overall champion. Theo Burows went up against Rashad Cunningham in the Men’s Fitness Category and came out on top as the Overall Champion.

Dekel Nesbitt made her return to the Women’s Figure Category. Nesbitt topped a field of competitors in the C Class Division and bested a total of six other competitors to be named the Overall Champion of that category.

Lakeisha Miller was also in that category and took home the D Class Division.

Tammy Stubbs came away with Overall Women’s Physique Trophy, knocking off long time champion Lorraine LaFleur in the process.

Akaela Nesbitt was one of three competitors in the women’s junior bikini category. Nonetheless, her efforts wowed the judges, making her the C Class Division winner and Overall Champion. She won her third trophy of the night competing in the Women’s Open Bikini Category and winning the D Class Division over fellow Grand Bahamian Aaliyah Rigby.

Rigby also finished second behind Akaela in the Women’s Junior Bikini Category.

However, in the Women’s Open Bikini Category, Carina Ferguson’s package earned her the Overall Championship and the E Class Division triumph.

The Women’s Master’s Bikini Category went to Daphne Porter-Fox, who also earned third place in the A Class of Women’s Open Category.

Maria Michopoulou ran away with the F Class Division of the Women’s Open Bikini Category. Desmond Bain was named the winner of the Men’s Classic D Class; Andrew Sweeting landed the Men’s Class E Class Division crown; Orick Nesbitt was the winner of the Men’s Bodybuilding Middle Heavyweight title and Bernard Davis won the Heavyweight Division of the Men’s Bodybuilding Category.

Arthur Elden from Abaco took second place in the Men’s Grand Masters (70+) Category. At 60 years old, Sharon Bethel proved she’s still got it, winning second place in the Women’s Master’s Bikini Category and second place in the Women’s Open Bikini D Class Division.

Charnice Bain took second place in the Women’s Figure C Class; Lyndsay Curry took second place in the Women’s Figure D Class and Henry Cooper took third in the Men’s Physique Open D Class.

BBFF Freeport Liasion Jan Johnson expressed thanks to all the local coaches who helped to get the athletes in top shape, including Caudel McNab, YMCA; Glen Stubbs, Ricky Outten, Petra Brice all at G B Fitness; Orick Nesbitt at Nesbitt’s Fitness; Paula Riley at GB Sports Centre; Robert Harris and Kim Nesbitt for her work with the fitness athletes.

She also extended thanks to this year’s sponsors, the Grand Bahama Port Authority, BTC, Freeport Oil, Frecon, Pelican Bay Hotel, Palacious Bus and Tour, Bugs R Us and everybody that helped to make this year a success.

As of right now, it’s expected that the Grand Bahama athletes will make up the bulk of this years bodybuilding and fitness team for the Central American and Caribbean Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships set for September 29-October 1 in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.

An official announcement on the final selection of names for this year’s team is expected before the week is out.
