(This study is from 2008, before Intermittent fasting became popular)

The 12 week study had 27 participants exercise for 45 minutes(only a few actually went to a gym, most was brisk walking) followed by a 12-14h mini fast, 3-5 days a week. There were no dietary restrictions placed on the subjects, only that they had to fast for 12-14h. The average weight loss was 7.4kg over the 12 weeks, with 7% reduction in body fat. Also noted was a 25% reduction in fasting insulin levels. Although this was a small study, it does have good implications for intermittent fasting which is gaining popularity. The authors attribute the increase in fatty acid oxidation to up regulation of AMPK and PGC-1alpha, as well as post exercise ketosis. I don't know if I could go 12h without eating 3-5 days a week, but this study shows that it's a good strategy for losing fat, specifically. It seems muscle was preserved, just like In a Keto diet.

I do IF when I gotta drop bf. Does it work? hell yeah. It's actually easy to do. I do the 16/8 approach 6 days a week. Matter of fact I'm starting today (2-13). Will be doing this for 12-16 weeks. Mental focus for me is freaking unreal for me when fasting.

You guys need to help me wrap my head around IM fasting. How is fasting going to help protect muscle? I get losing weight but what is helping preserve muscle when you fast for 16 hours out of the day...................help I am a little slow !!

I was in the same boat as you my friend. Gotta eat every 2-3 hours otherwise you will go into a catabolic state. There are plenty of studies on IF. Just think about it when you fast do you really think your body is going to go after LBM first? Nope. Give it a shot.
