AS I See It - New Year Same Issues

As I set down to write this we are are a week into theNew Year and the gym is full. I have been through this scenario many times inthe last 30 years. However I have to say that in the last several years, thingshave change and not for the better. You still have your old school guys and girls that are like clockwork. You know who is going to be there and at what time, so the gym becomes almost like a country club for those that would rather lift weights than swing a golf club. Some of the greatest relationships that I have ever had started in the gym. I am not sure that the new comers are going to be able to say that.

It seems that the some of the new people have a mindset that they already know everything and they don’t need to ask anyone anything. I made the mistake to ask one guy how long he had been training and he said he has an online trainer and has been kill it for 3 month. He had his gallon jug of water which was full of something red, had on his 5% t shirt and GASP shorts. I am sure his outfit cost more than all ofthe contents in my gym bag. He then went on to say that he was doing research for his first cycle as he wanted to bulk for the remainder of the winter and then start to cut. This kid was maybe 23, and may have weighted 145 lbs, and that is giving him the benefit of the doubt. I listened for a few more minutes and just had to walk away.

This new breed of beginners are some of the laziest, most self centered, manner less and disrespectful individuals that I have seen in years. I am making an assumption as I know all of them are not this way. They would rather take selfies and post them on facebook or instagram than do a set to failure. I guess the best way to describe the behavior that they exhibit is entitled. This goes for both the men and the women. I saw an elderly man doing pull downs, he walked away and went to get him a drink. A young girl sat down and started doing pulldowns as well. When he walked back, I heard his ask if he could work in. Now mind you, he was already on the station and the young lady watched him get up and go to get a drink. She just looked at him and said that she had 4 more sets. The old man just shook his head and walked off. After her first set, she proceeded to take photos of herself longer than it took her to do her first set.

Total disgrace.

So for all the neewbies that have made your way to the gym, here is a little piece of advice that will help your gym experience be a success.

  1. Regardless of how many hours of Rich Piana, The Hodge Twins or Boston Lloyd you have watched, you really don’t know anything. So shut up, listen and watch.
  2. No you don’t need to walk up to the biggest guy in the gym and ask him about steroids. That is a good way to get hurt and hurt bad.
  3. If someone asks to work in with you, let them.
  4. Always remember to say please and thank you. It goes a long way.
  5. Don’t just do cardio!!!
  6. Find out what a compound movements is and do them.
  7. Treat people with respect and be nice.

Steroids/Training

If you are just starting out or even if you have been training for a year or two, you don’t need to get caught up in the gear game. You need to stay focused on the basics and keep pushing and making progress. I know people that never used anything other than protein, creatine and multivitamins their entire life and they look awesome. Not everyone can be Mr. O, and not everyone has the genetics to get close even with a boat load of gear. Very few people really push themselves, unless you are pushing past the point of failure constantly, you will never reach your potential. You must destroy the muscle for it to grow and then feed it with the correct nutrients to stimulate the healing process. It takes years to learn your body, so don’t worry about getting into the gear game, at least not until you have paid your dues.

The Truth

As far as training, you can ask most anyone and they will help you. Just be nice and you will be surprised at the number of peoplewilling to help. There are thousands of different training methods out there, pick up a book, search online or talk with someone that looks like they know what they are doing and just get started. Don’t worry about your macros or micros, just eat good quality food and stay away from junk. Get plenty of water and at least 8 hours of sleep and remember that your body grows outsideof the gym, not in it. The other thing is do not get caught up in PR’s as you’re the only one that cares. No one else gives 2 shits about your lifts, just train and STFU. I am not saying don’t have fun and be supportive of your friends and help to motivate them on their lifts. But in the greater scheme of things, how much you lift isn’t that big of a deal.

Ladies

Forget everything that you though you knew about losing weight and give me just a few minutes.

  1. Lift weights – it builds muscle and helps to burn fat. No you are not going to get big and bulky.
  2. Forget all that crap about eating like a bird. Eat like a like an athletic. Use food as fuel and don’t eat out of habit.
  3. Use cardio as a tool and not an entire style of working out. If you are spending more time doing cardio than lifting weights, you need to rethink your entire program.
The mulit billion dollar weight loss industry is a machine. One designed to make money and have repeat customers. If you use this product or use this meal service you will lose x amount of weight and then they have their celebrity endorser come on that has lost x amount and they spout the benefitsof the product. This is good old marketing, and don’t get caught up in the bells and whistles.

It is called training, not resting. You have to put in the time to get the results.

In this industry, they new yrs folks are called January bugs, kind of like June bugs only the winter version. They gone by February.

Just other day I was sitting at my front desk area and saw a member on one of those big balls, the size of beach balls. He was on top, like he was swimming or paddling it, then he disappears from sight and one second later I hear a big crash....yep he's paddled himself into a wall, the stupid f***. He was fine, wasnt hurt a bit.

Great posting, thanks DRTBear. Last January I was busier, this Jan not as much. One of these days I'm gonna start a thread on how to avoid the general public when hard core training. Beleive me its much harder for me, as on owner, to avoid them than anyone else. The average members always want to talk to me, as thats part of the territory. Of course I cant be rude either, thats my bread & butter

It has to be hard, as the gym is your business and you cannot alienate anyone, but it must be a pain in the ass to try and get in a good workout with all of the distractions.

A royal pain in the ass....if I could swing it, I'd much rather train at 4AM which is after hrs and be done by the time the ordinarys start arriving. But honestly, I sure cant go off on the sweet little 80

yr old Granny who asks you on rep 12 of heavy squat day "how much are you lifting" LOL. You just suck it up, smile and say something like "not enough" and hope that deters them from further questions

The above is what I hear all the time, I tell the ladies: OK if you accidently win the Ms Universe contest, you can sue me! This usually sets their mind at ease

Yup, when we lived in Vegas and went to Gold's (when there were Gold's Gyms in Vegas...), my wife would often protest doing this or that exercise because she didn't want to look like the extremely muscular broad on more testosterone than me... "Honey, don't worry about it. You're in no danger of growing bigger shoulders than me. I promise, you can stop LONG before you look like that!" LOL!

And they will never get it out of their mind that they will not get that big..... smh
