Anxiety, Sleep & recovery

I deal with both sleep & anxiety issues, so I know how it can impact pretty much everything you do EVERY day! I have been working out pretty consistently for the last decade & I understand well how bad a lack of sleep can affect recovery. It flat out becomes miserable! I threw anxiety in with the topic because anyone who has that, knows that it go's hand & hand with sleep as well. If you have 3 or 4 things on your mind that you are anxiously waiting to see how they get resolved... It's hard to sleep! If you get things on your mind or just can't sleep for whatever reason, a lot of people would suggest going for a jog or doing something to wear off extra energy. That may work for some, but that DEFINITELY doesn't work for me! Just winds me tighter & get's my adrenaline going. That's usually when I start getting angry about it lol

I have recently been considering meditating. I would have never thought that would be something I would want to do, but the more I think about it... the more it makes since! To me, it seems like you are essentially doing what you would be doing in bed by trying to relax, but wouldn't be focusing so much on why ya can't sleep. Relaxing is really the only option for me!

I have tried several meds, including pharmaceutical grade stuff through prescription. To many issues come with the stronger meds & is habit forming. Even harder to sleep when ya get off of it! High dose of otc sleeping aids are the same way. I have found out that valerian root works a little some times, but is very mild. Ai's work surprising well! There has been a couple times in the past during pro-hormone usage I used them & I noticed a better sleep pattern almost right away! Although, I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to use an ai just for that reason on a regular basis, but what do I know??

I actually blame a lack of sleep for some additional wear & tear picked up over the last several years. I don't think I healed right all the time & it has continued to get worse. This is another reason why I think 2 on 1 off is a good training schedule for me. I think it is a good idea to use that rest day to sleep in if possible & would be a good time to take a med if ya have one. Don't know how many out there deal with similar issues, but maybe something here will help. As always, I'm open for suggestions!

Several things help me get a better nights sleep. Melatonin and valerian root works. Wallmart sells a sleep aid called diphenhydramine. Same ingredient that is in the brand name sleep aids. I have used it and it works. Going to sleep at the same time every night gets your body into the habit of sleeping at that time. I also listen to relaxing music by Michael e and Peter Pearson. You can find their music on Youtube.

Tried the melatonin and valerian root. They work for me a little, but not always. The sleeping aids are okay, but habit forming & I usually only use those for when I have went with little sleep for several days. Been going to bed earlier lately & that helps. Can't do music. Tried that before with several different kinds & it has never helped. Good ideas though

I don't have any suggestions but I did want to say I understand. I have struggled with anxiety for a long time. Some nights I don't sleep at all. Then I will crash and sleep too much. Good luck brutha

Thanks man & you too. It's definitely a struggle & you'll never know how serious it is unless you deal with it first hand. Guess I could try moving to Colorado..

If you meditate on a regular basis right before you go to bed on a regular basis, you will unclutter your mind and drop right off to sleep. Look up Jennifer O'Neill on the internet.

Meditation was seeming like the best option at this point & it's reassuring to hear ya say that. Will look her up on google hopefully tonight

I looked Jennifer O'Neill up. All the videos I found were just discussions of spiritual awakening, developing phsychic abilities, etc. I couldn't find actual meditation techniques or detailed videos of just meditating. I'm sure they're there, but I didn't find them. Besides that, to each there own & not that there is anything wrong with it, but she is on a whole other level lol. Just didn't strike my interest, but thanks for the idea. I did find some videos by other authors though

I have worked with people with anxiety over the years and have found that medication can make a huge impact. I call it getting unplugged. About 30 or 45 min before you are wanting to go to bed, turn off all electronic in your home. If you want to play music, that is good but breathing is the key component. The best way to describe the breathing would be using the 3 count rule. Breath in through your nose for a 3 count, hold it for a 3 count, exhale through your mouth for 3 count, hold your breath for 3 count and then repeat. All of your focus should be on your breathing. Try doing this in a seated position with your belly button going in and out, not your chest rising and falling.

Everyone's advice on meditation etc is certainly valid. However, I have been diagnosed with anxiety and social paranoia's. I have trouble gaining weight because of it. If I have a good week I'll weigh 200+lbs if I have a very stressful week I can drop close to 10lbs. NO change in training or diet or "supplements". I was prescribed cyproheptadine. That has helped me greatly with appetite(weight management), sleep, and a little help with the anxiety itself.

Picamilon bro. Google it and see what you think. It could remedy all those issues. I've been using it a lot lately and I love it.

It's a very absorbable form of GABA. It can cross the blood/brain barrier unlike straight GABA. It can be taken during the day as well.

I like the idea of the 3 count. I will be doing this or something similar to that very soon. The other problem is, I am so easily distracted that I will find 10 other things to do & than completely forget to do it! I'll write it down if I have to lol

I can definitely understand the loss of appetite! I get a loss of appetite when it is really high, but luckily I have a large appetite & will make up for it later! I could actually see it damn near starving someone if it got so severe. Not a fan of meds. Honestly, I could be on some now, but choose not to lol. Besides that, your body grows a tolerance for that stuff & is a bit#@ to get off of it! Some meds are worse than others. Going to a doctor again will be the last resort

I'll have to look up the picamilon hopefully tonight. I could at least try it, if it looks interesting

I'm under tremendous amt of stress these days, prob the most in my entire life, mostly financial. Some people eat to deal with stress, I however, stop eating. I've cut 2 meals out and have dropped at least 12 lbs in last 6 wks, but at least the meals I get are pretty good, but I hate being this light!

To get to sleep, my friend gave me saraquel (sp?) which is a huge psychosis drug that treats a variety of conditions. I literally gnaw no more than maybe 3 pinheads size off it and presto 20 min later I'm sleepy. The issue is it makes me insatiably hungry, making me get up and down about 3 scoops of whey protein in the middle of night.

Hoping all this stress gets allievated soon, maybe by June and i can get back to normal. By reading these posts I realize I'm not alone, wishing all the Bros good luck!

I am very familiar with that med! It does work well. Definitely good for ya if your having a hard time keeping weight on & it's increasing your appetite. I think most of it is just accepting in your head that worrying does no good! My attitude lately... "accept the worst thing that could happen to ya & hope for the best!". Kind of negative, but oh well lol
