Hype Denial

When people are faced with a disaster or potential for danger, they are often left with what is called a “normalcy bias”. This phrase refers to the assumption that since everything has been okay up until this given point in time, that things will continue to be okay. Take for example the threat of a large scale natural disaster such as an earthquake or volcanic eruption. Perhaps people in the community have been hearing predictions of doom and destruction for so long that when information comes up that shows something bad is really going to happen, they brush it off and file it away into the mental folder with all the other unrealized threats.

And then it happens.

While much less dramatic or important in the grand scheme of things, there is a very similar complex in the bodybuilding world when it comes to up and coming bodybuilders. There is definitely a tendency for many to jump on the hype train whenever an impressive new talent emerges, and what this causes is a knee jerk reaction of low expectations by those who have been duped by previous “future Mr.Olympias”. There is no arguing that many bodybuilders have been promoted with promises that they will dethrone the current champions and bring new standards of muscularity, symmetry, condition, better hair, congeniality…god, pretty much everything. Time has proven that most of these were flops. Just by sheer percentage, there was no conceivable way that all of these men could be as legendary as the folklore surrounding them as by very definition they would have rendered themselves normal by the sheer volume of them. But has the amount of unfulfilled potential and over hyped flops jaded fans from seeing when something truly special is in front of them?

Human being are strange. There is something programmed in some of us that drives us to not want to be sold on something. Some of us want to be the guy who says “I told you so” when things go wrong so badly, they refuse to embrace any chance that something might really change the future of the given topic. Call it ego, or call it a normalcy bias, either way it is very prevalent in bodybuilding.

As the Arnold Classic approaches, we have several competitors who can easily be related to this topic. On one hand, Cedric McMillan probably has more potential that anyone in the world at the moment. If Cedric continues to add a few lbs in the right places, and finally comes in the condition that the judges hold these guys standard too, he (in my opinion) could possess the best physique in the planet. He is a tall bodybuilder with round muscle bellies and beautiful structure. Although he is usually one of the biggest guys on stage, I do feel he will need just a few more pounds of stage weight to compensate for what will come off when he hits granite like conditioning. His height and width also allows him to push the boundaries of muscle mass without it piling up on itself and looking squatty.

But we have been saying this for years. Big Cedric has made a career for himself and is certainly a fan favorite, but he (so far) has fallen into the category of bodybuilders who have under delivered on their hype. His name is often seen referenced when someone new comes along and a fan will cite McMillan as an example why the new competitor doesn’t deserve the hype. “People said the same thing about Cedric”. Big Ramy is slowly entering himself into this category as well, but has improved in each showing and with a recent switch in coaching there is reason for hopeful optimism in regards to his future.

Enter Justin Compton. Sure, people are almost getting sick of hearing the name by this point, but there is a reason people can’t stop talking about him. I think we are looking at the next legitimate threat to the Mr.Olympia title (within a few years) and the best new talent we have seen in ages…although I can already hear people shouting examples of previously hyped bodybuilders at their computer screen like I must be some bandwagon jumper who has ridden every train. I have not. The main difference that sets Compton apart from the rest is that he hasn’t competed out of shape since he was beginning as an amateur. That cannot be said about any of the other recent “future Mr.Olympias”. It is almost impossible to critique anything on him that isn’t going to be fixed with time (more mass in some areas). He isn’t missing entire body parts or severely deficient in insertion points or anything that will stop any type of progress long term. Despite the fact he gains 5lbs every time the damn camera turns on and has conditioning on par with any of his peers, there is still a sea of naysayers who are desperate to lump him in with the other failed “greats to be”.

Next month we will truly see if we have found the first bodybuilder to deliver on the hype since Phil Heath or another one to throw in the “told ya so” bin. My vote is on the first one.

So what you're saying brother is you're picking Cedric McMillan correct? Which I agree with everything you said about him he definitely has the best physique and symetry in body but I'm right now. He has the round muscle bellies and everything it takes to be an Olympian considering what he does for a living being in the Army and raising kids you gotta bow your head to the man. I mean everyone thought Dallas McCarver was the next best thing however when he stood next to Brandon curry in the last show and Brandon really exposed the fact that he does not have the full round muscle bellies that it takes. Brandon is another one who if he keeps going on the road that he's been on for the last year I could see him placing top 3 in the Olympia, and Justin Compton you are definitely right about him too. He's up and coming and has a good physique with round muscle bellies, and the thing that he has going for him that Cedric nor Brandon Curry does is that he is Young because let's be honest nobody is going to be filled unless Phil gets hurt or decides to stop competing. I did see a interview with Phil a few months ago where he said I believe this is what he said anyway that in 2020 he was done which would leave him with what he has 5 Olympia's now. So that would be 3 more that's 8 but you would think he would want to break the record and go for 9 or 10 right? As far as big Romney goes I think unfortunately he will be a top 5 guy but nothing more than that he is a giant but maybe with this new coach he will come out and show me something different this year. Then you have Shawn Rhoden who also has a almost perfect physique and cemetry like Cedric and has placed second next to Phil a few times, the question is can Sean put on anymore muscle and still look as good as he does either way even if he does I still don't see him beating pill. Like I said I don't see anybody beating Phil in the near future. Last but not least we have Dexter Jackson Who unfortunately even though he has a great physique to I think he has reached his limit considering his age. One of the most underrated guys out there who I don't think ever placed higher than 7th place one year was my favorite bodybuilder The X-Men Tony Freeman. In fact Tony was so fed up with the ifbb for the fact that they do not tell you what they're looking for. In an interview he said when a basketball player steps out of bounds you don't need a referee to tell you you can see it. In a football game if someone commits at penalty you can see it. The problem with the ifbb is there are no written rules so it depends on what judges are judging the show, and unfortunately there are a lot of politics involved which is why Tony is no longer competing in the ifbb. I'm not going to say he's right for not competing but I would have loved to see him stick around. Again I think because of his physique which I think personally is one of the best physiques ever would still never have a chance of beating Phil. So basically that leaves us with the question of when is phil going to stop and who do you personally think can dethrone him? I like this conversation brother... also let me know how you feel about what I think..

I have meet both Dallas and Justin and I think with time, Justin is going to have more long term success. Dallas is a big man, but there is just something missing with his package and after the illness or whatever that was this year, I am not sure he can get back to the shape that Matt Jansen had him before he switched trainers.

I think you will see some politics come into play with the guys that train over at the Oxygen gym in Kuwait. This is not PC but when it comes to the IFBB the bottom line is business and $$$. They need champions that support the entire IFBB and not just the men of the sport. It was apparent in the interview with Big Ramy in Generation Iron 2, that he and his team don't feel that women should be in the sport. Then again, in a culture where most women are required to be covered from head to toe, one would be lead to believe that running around in a small bikini would ruffle some feathers of this crew.

Just me 2 cents.

I completely agree with you when you say them guys are from the Middle East do not want woman in the sport. And I'm starting to think they might have found a real myosatin inhibitor over there in Kuwait because the extra size that Brandon Curry put on in one year from training over there was ridiculous. I always thought Dallas McCarver we have a good future in the sport until hot scene him stand next to Brandon Curry, and that's when I realized he does not have the full round muscle bellies that it takes. I don't know if you have seen that picture or not let me know and if not I will post it for you? You never answered my question as far as do you really think anyone can dethrone Phil Heath? Or it's still going to continue to win like I think he is until he either gets hurt or retires whatever comes first?

Remember that it was Cade Thomas who wrote the article, not drtbear1967.

And I have thought the same thing for some time now that they must have a good myostatin inhibitor over there. It's not just Brandon Curry who has gained mass like that. Seems to be a number of guys that have done it.

I think that Phil will be Mr. O as long as he wants unless he get's hurt. They have found something over there. But it will take someone getting pissed in that circle to every let the rest of us in on it. I haven't see the picture that you are speaking of, but would like to.
