Gym i visited in Houston

My wife and I are in Houston for the weekend, visiting family. We're staying in an air bnb apartment and I found a gym a quarter mile away. Go there this morning not knkwing what to expect and was DELIGHTED. This place reminds me of Mans World Gym in Trenton, NJ where I first started training a long time ago. It is the polar opposite of "high glitz". It's in what looks like was an industrial building. It's well equipped with high quality but older equipmemt; almost all iron plates (there were some rubber coated bumper plates); has everything I could possibly want for a workout and then some.

It's owned by an IFBB pro named Ken Jones - SUPER nice guy. Cheap "drop in" rate, too. I can't wait to go back Monday! I'd go back tomorrow but they're closed on Sunday...

I gotta tell you, I LOVED being in an "old school" no-nonsense gym.

This is funny: I was the only customer when I got there. The owner approached me to greet me; he looks me up and down with no effort to be hide it; then says, "You look good." I was pretty pleased to get an obviously sincere compliment from an IFBB pro. Afterward I thought, 'If that happened anywhere but a bodybuilding gym, I'd think the guy was queer and teying to pick me up...' LOL!!! Funny shit!

Are you certain this wasnt still the case lmao , you are sorta kind on the ole eyes sweet cheeks!

EMW14 can you reveal the name of the gym?
My gym is as hard core as I can be and still keep the doors open as my market draw is in the farmlands and 30K is all I have to draw from, but the people who "get" the hard core feel, who know my love of free weights, who appreciate chains, deadlifts, chalk and doing PR's absolutly love it here, no glitz at all, black and white theme, my place isnt hospital clean but is clean enough.

I look at these justin beiber places with all the chrome machines, cardio eqp and some funky looking fitness fad stuff and I wonder WTF are they thinking? Gotta be the $

Sure, I just didn't want to come off like an unpaid advertisement...

It's called Level 1 Fitness. It's on Cleburne St in downtown Houston.

This place is in a totally different type of market. This is one of 3 gyms that I noticed that are in walking distance of each other. One is a crossfit place, so that might not count. Level 1 Fitness is the only one I saw the inside of, but none of the 3 is any kind of justin bieber place, as you so eloquently put it! The ither "real" gym I saw has a flat; incline; and decline barbell bench (one each) outside. It's under the roof of the building and closed in by a chain link fence. I wouldn't want to have to carry a barbell and plates outside to use them, but I saw a few guys who had done just that. This place is pretty much across the street from my stepson's house.

Anyway, no idea what the population of Houston is, but more than 30k! Lol
