Beem doing "Barbell conditioning" lately

I recently decided to hire my wife's trainer to do "conditioning" training with me. We met this woman, whose name is Soonya, when we lived in Vegas for 2 years, and now that we're back east, my wife has kept on with Soonya via Skype (we have a well equipped home gym).

I broke my leg a couple of months back, and wanted to try to get some conditioning prior to starting up playing hockey again so I'm not gasping for breath (as much) when I do.

All I can say about this is HOLY SHIT! I use the term "barbell conditioning" very loosely, because often it's body weight exercises or light weight dumbbells. Apparently these are all crossfit exercises which she has modified or combined creatively.

This morning's session was mercifully not focused on legs, as i did a fairly heavy leg workout yesterday. I mistakenly thought it was going to be "easy"...

For example, she had me do "bear crawl" for 45 seconds, then immediately do burpees combined with a pullup x 15. That was one set. Rest for 15 seconds and repeat... That was only a fraction of the 30 minute workout. Sounds easy... I started off thinking, "This is a breeze". Big mistake! Heart rate WAY UP, breathing very hard, and drenched in sweat!

Awesome workouts!

Ok, tell me if any of you have ever seen, heard of, or tried this exercise: "reverse crab toe touches". Start sitting on the floor, feet flat in front of you, knees bent. Hands flat on the floor on each side of your butt, maybe a little behind WITH FINGERS POINTING FORWARD, TOWARD YOUR FEET. Now, raise your butt off the floor so you're in a sort of arch position. Got that? It's much easier if you turn your hands around the wrong way - which is what feels natural - don't do that. Now, lift right foot and lift up while simultaneously lifting left hand; touch your toe when foot and hand meet. Repeat with opposite foot/hand. Do this for 30 seconds.

This woman actually looked graceful doing this. Her ass is a good foot off the floor, maybe more. Ok, I think, looks pretty easy..... First of all, I couldn't get my ass more than 4 or 5 inches off the floor. If my fingers point behind me I sure can, but not with fingers pointing towards my feet. I will not attempt to describe what I loomed like - I could see myself very clearly in the mirror - but I will tell you it was anything but graceful.

I like to think of myself as an athletic guy. I've been playing ice hockey since I was 4 years old. In general, any sport I try, I can play enough to at least have some fun doing it. Never played pro anything, but maybe could've gotten to tje minor leagues in hockey if not for my misspent youth. All that said, this exercise exposed me for an awkward, out of shape klutz! I'll be trying a few of these regularly until I can do it. Major ab and core strength builder! I thought deadlifts and squats were plenty to build core strength. WRONG!
