What causes "The Pump"

The pump had been renowned since the birth of bodybuilding, but what causes the pump?

When you lift weight, you cause damage to muscle cells. This causes an influx of sodium and water into the cell, while an efflux of potassium outside of the cell. In addition, fluid leaving the muscle is restricted, but the fluid going to the muscle is not restricted. This means your muscles are filling with fluid, which is why they look full and hard when you have a great pump!

and i thought it was just all the blood being pumped in, like a dick getting hard, lmao.

Why is it that it is harder and harder to get a pump after muscles have been worked for years?.................and before you say "age" let me explain. I have never worked forarms directly until five years ago, and after all these years of lifting you forget the pump. First time I hit these babies hard, the memories come flooding back.........oh yeah that how it used to feel in "X". It is that weak, achy, skin spliting feeling.

Even doing countless drop sets to failure it is hard to reproduce that newbie feeling of the pump; anyone else have the same issue as me?

less of a pump as you become more conditioned I think.
Makes sence, I guess I would like to know the chemical component that is causing this in your body, not that I want to replicate it after 25 years of consistant workout, but I have a feeling that this pump turns on growth factors that we are still ignorant to ( give science another 25 years to figure it out on a molecular basis).

Have you guys every given a body part a week off and then hit it hard? I have gotten some good pumps that way.

Yes and I need to do it more often, problem is working out helps clear my head and feel better all around.

To answer you, I get a better pump, but it is never that newbie "pump".

I had to take off yesterday. Damn shoulders and traps were locked up. Shoulders are shot and eat up with arthritis and the cold weather is doing them no good. Hitting it tonight and going to see how it goes.

I am with you............it sucks getting old!

I am giving this new medicine a few more weeks and if I don't get any better, I am getting back on King Deca!!

so do you think it may have anything to do with muscle memory, too. i always got decent pumps as a natty, but never like way back when, like 40 years ago. since i started my own trt though, i've had some pretty darn good pumps, so bad sometimes, i could hardly scratch my neck, lol.
problem is these days with old injuries, arthritis, and problems emanating from service, i miss days.
i at least try to get in two days a week. it doesn't always happen.
i tried to go off the deca once, but it helps, so now i'm just keeping it on therapeutic level mostly.
but then i'm pretty much just cruising right now to get my psa back down.
all in all, i've been getting some really good pumps on gear.

I am planning on getting in the gym this afternoon. Life just has gotten in the way this week. But what that means is I should get some good pumps. My plan is to do a couple of sets to failure on chest, back, shoulders and then bi and tris. Very little rest between sets.

10 secs rest between biceps worked for me. Now I do curls everyday with a new routine for size and my curl has gone up 10 pounds. I thought bout writing an article on here but don't know what most people need help with when it comes to a training routine.

Curls everyday? Everything I have read says you will not grow doing that. Need to give yourself at least 48 hours to recover. If you are growing from this that would be great news. Please keep us posted.

I think doing something everyday to simulate growth passes the "sniff test/makes common sence". I am originally from the heartland, ever see the forarms of a milking farmer, when they used to do it twice a day by hand. Crazy forarms and could crush your hands during a hand shake if they were upset!!

the forearms are really different and will grow if stimulated daily due to a high amount of tendons.
the calves are the same way. i increased grip strength dramatically just by heavy deadlift without straps. most farmers of old didn't have big biceps, but they were incredibly strong. like a whole lot of the old heavy industry workers. they were cock strong sob's even though they didn't look it.

i did full body workouts three times a week for years, until getting older got in the way. as a natty, i still grew a 50" chest and 17 inch arms at 5'7.5", not pumped. i usually didn't have all the supplements, either. i was lucky to just have protein and three squares.
i'd say genetics plays a big part in growth and getting pumped. i was a hard gainer, but still got pretty good pumps when i worked out. i ate a lot, too.

its an article by Christian thabideau I think that's how its spelt. 60% of max x 10. 70% 3x6. 110% cheat curl. The weight will very in feel heavy to light each day. He said if you have lagging biceps to give it a try. I can get away with chest 3 x a week if I mix tris and shoulders in the right way. Here is for power on flat bench it should go up 5-10 pounds a week even if you're experienced. 70%x1 80%x1 90%x1 95%x1 97.5%x1. About 45-1 minute rest on both those workouts. Now if you're competing or in better shape then most of us I don't know if it applies.
