Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose inside a Greenwich Village home on Sunday, cops said.
Hoffman’s body was found by a friend at 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning in an apartment at 35 Bethune St., sources said.
Cops are at the scene and are investigating, sources said.
Hoffman has admittedly struggled with drug addiction in the past, and reportedly checked himself into rehab last year for heroin abuse.

I liked him. He was pretty funny and could play a variety of roles. I often wonder if recreational drugs were legal and not so taboo if there would be as many deaths. Manufacturing standards, quality control, and more money set aside for treatment through taxation on legitimate sales...

It would be 100000000 X worse if they were legalized bro, and I am specifically speaking of the heroin, which he was addicted to and in and out of treatment for, OPIATES are so fucking addictive that if they were legalized the problem would be out of control! Now i know thats my opinion but when it comes to OPIATES , i don't think my opinion is wrong here, no way should heroic or pain pills be legalized

I can't speak on the other shit but i know legalizing OPIATES would kill this country! And Legalizing POT aint exactly helping this country and these dummies people are raising

he looks pretty beat up for a 46 years old

yeah i thought he was in his 50's , i mean i never actually wondered how old he was but i would have guessed years ago he was in his 50's , being obese doesn't help either i guess, couple that with drugs and i guess death comes a knockin

I disagree completely. This is a Fallacy of epic proportions. I think complete legalization of all drugs would have little to no change in the amount of people addicted to drugs. The only thing the war on drugs has done is erode our constitution rights, made the United States the number one jailer on the planted and gave us trillions of dollars in debt in the process. Prohibition of drugs has created a cartel that controls the black market instead of the free market. Legalization of drugs would cripple the cartel and create a free market where people can get recreational drugs that are created in clean laboratory conditions without fears of over dose or being slipped another drug or dangerous fillers.

Dont even get me started on prescription pain meds. These are legal and are MUCH more dangerous than anything illegal out there. Its just silly to think that if all drugs were legal tomorrow everyone would do them and there would be this extreme rise in use. Its just not true at all.

I cannot understand this misguided notion that somehow the Government knows whats best for us and that morality can be legislated. Again, its just not true.

I'm with ya on the pointless war on drugs and much of your argument, however when it comes to opiates specifically hero and pain meds, i think it would do a lot more harm addiction wise in this country, i could be wrong but i don't think so, these are things that people get addicted to very fast, physical painful addiction! Coke, and pot aren't nearly as addictive, so I'm all for those being legalized, but no way to opiates

Here is what would happen if all other drugs were legalized and opiates were not. There would all of a sudden be a switch in manufacturing by the cartels and Opiates would be the new coke and pot. Do I think opiates are bad things and are very dangerous? Yes. But I do not see them as anymore dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes. Alcohol is WAY more addicting and currently kills more people.

yeah i don't know about the ciggerate being more addictive, I've never seen anyone run out of cigarets and go rob and kill another person for money to buy another pack of smokes! Opiate withdrawal will make someone do shit they never thought they were capable of.

Oh and i use to love me some ecstasy, so they can legalize that all they want, lol, . Its the shit that makes you sick or violently ill , and ready to do anything to stop being sick, its those drugs I'm against altogether

And to be honest I think legalizing pot is fucking stupid! I think its just another nail in the coffin this country is being buried in!

NIDA National Drug Facts Week - Shatter the Myths - Frequently Asked Questions of NIDA's Drug Facts Chat Day - General Questions About Drug Abuse

How many people die each year from drug usage?

About 570,000 people die annually due to drug use. That breaks down to about 440,000 from disease related to tobacco, 85,000 due to alcohol, 20,000 due to illicit (illegal) drugs, and 20,000 due to prescription drug abuse. If you want more information, check out NIDA's site at National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Sounds like the numbers are overwhelmingly in support of my argument. 440K die from tobacco related disease, 20K from all illegal drugs. Hmmmm.

I know plenty of people who have done pot, or currently do pot and are perfectly fine, go to work everyday and are productive members of society. The only danger from pot is getting caught with it and being arrested for having a joint.

BTW I have not nor will I ever smoke pot. Even if it were legal. I do not even drink alcohol but I think all drugs should be free for people to do. What people want to do in the privacy of their own homes is not the business of the government. Period.

It looks like your argument is saying as soon as things are made legal more people die, lol, thats what i see brutha, lol. legal = more use = more death, thats what those numbers tell me,

and believe me brutha I'm with ya on most of it, I'm just not good with heroin ever being legal, I've never used it but I've seen what it does to people. and pain meds are worse yet, so i think those things should be eradicated from the face of the earth like the ebola virus, lol

The prescription addictions weren't something many people started because they just bought a few here and there then became addicted. The doctors pushed them on people for twisted ankles, tooth aches and any other minor pain then when they got addicted to them, they black balled these addicts by cutting them off and offering them no way to get help through insurance. Yea, some clinics may give you a "break" on the price of these outrageous costs, but they're a cash business for the most part so they're only interested in the money, not necessarily the patient getting back to a normal lifestyle.

I've had someone close to me fight Opiate dependency and has been in and out of treatment centers and I am outraged more and more because the doctors started them on the pain pills then after years and years of being on them, they all of a sudden have a crack down because people are abusing them and they got their script cut off. So now this person has to go to a treatment center and pay weekly for the visit, then the script they're given is $700 for a month supply. Insurance will not pay anything, but will reimburse a slight portion after so many visits, but until that number is reached they've gotta pay cash.

I don't blame the addict at all for this, I think from day one this was a plan put into motion by pharmaceutical companies, the government and the insurance companies. They've all made their millions hand over fist and now want to make everyone look like a junkie yet they made them this way by pushing pills on everyone.

I'm so glad that I've never been on them, I never will go on them and might even slap a doctor if they tried to give them to me for anything simple. I broke my arm in 2 places and never took a single pain pill after I left the hospital the day it happened. Granted there is a reason for it (thank you FBOP for being up tight assholes), but nonetheless, I didn't take any pain medicine

Cigarettes are legal ONLY because the people were lied to for DECADES. They had Doctors and sports stars hyping them as good for you, issued them to soldiers in the military all the while they knowingly had addictive chemicals in them. Cigarettes are way worse of a drug than opiates and they are legal. Thats the argument I put forth. I never said cigarettes are better for you, thats absurd. Cigarettes being legal just goes to the absurdity of the drug laws in this country.

I think people should be free to use whatever they want just as long as the behavior they are doing does no harm to others. Do all the drugs you want in your home, just do not go out in public and drive. You get high and drive it should be treated WORSE than a DUI. Businesses should also be free to decide to have a drug free work place and there should be education given to people to warn of the dangers of all drugs. You do drugs you get ZERO health insurance. These are ways to curb the use of drugs all the while giving the people a more free society.

The Main Manufacturer of OXycontin paid out millions in a law suit for sending out their Pharm reps telling doctors that oxycontin was NOT addictive lol, i read the article last year i think on this site maybe when we had this very discussion, so yeah when you push a product you know is super addictive and lie about it, then your a piece of shit! Big Pharma is no better , or actually worse then any Mexican Cartel!

well bro, it won't be too long until we find out what the ramifications of full legalization will be, as Im sure this country isn't too far from legalizing everything under the sun lol I pray not but I could see the experiment coming!

They are one in the same if you ask me. Either way, you're manufacturing a drug and pushing it upon people, whether it's a legal drug or not makes no difference to me. It is 10 times worse to me when it's being done by someone who's supposed to have your best interest in mind (your doctor). Don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of doctors that won't just hand out this or that, but there's plenty that handed out highly addictive pills like tic tacs for years.
