I've had two slipped discs in my lower back and from my experience I would tell your friend to keep on working out "lightly" and stay away from any lower back exercises and let it heal on its own. My doctor told me that the majority of slipped discs heal on their own in time.
Hey 46 research Krav Mega. It focuses more on self defense and real life situations than the more traditional martial arts. It might be more like what your looking for.
I'm lactose intolerant also and I drink soy milk. Its called "Silk" and its damn good. You'll probably just have to stay away from all dairy products...thats not bad though most of it isn't great for you anyway.
