does anyone have a list of any vitamins or minerals that one should watch to not overdose on

reason i ask is because i have a HUGE bottle of 1 a day multis and have been taking 3 a day with meals... i wasnt sure if a basic multi had a standard high dose of anything that when taken too frenquently could result if side effects or overdose

Most multi vitamins are so weak you usually do not have to be concerned. I take 4 a day of a fairly normal multi. depending on BW you would have to work pretty hard to OD. Any supplement can be dangerous at too high a dose, the easiest Ive heard of is Selenium. I think any thing over 300-400 mcg can cause Selenium Poisoning. Some people have actually got it from eating pumkin seeds! There is a book called " Perscription for Nutrional Healing". Its an awesome book, gives you info on every supplement you can think of, breaks down amino acids. It also breaks down ailments and give you suggested supplements to cure them. Tons of good info in it, and you be amazed at the recommended doses, Its usually 3-4 times what you get in multi vitamins.

Wow, multis already have like 3000% daily allowance for a lot of things. Sounds like a good book to read. Thanks.

From what I understand, MOST vitamins you take, you cannot overdose on. The body excretes any unused vitamin in your urine. Hence the reason why when you're taking a high dose multi, you urine comes out fluorescent yellow or sometimes with a tinge of green and smells like vitamins. I say MOST because Vitamin E, Iron, and Zinc can all be overdosed and cause you some long term issues.

Any vitamin that is fat-soluable such as vit-A, vit E, etc., have to be used with care because they will build up in the body. Excess of any water-soluable vitamins like the b-complex vitamins will get flushed out of the body. Most minerals will also build up such as iron and zinc as LeatherHead mentioned.

thank for the info fellas

figured it would be an interesting topic no one really touches base on

I'm glad you asked... you had me worried the other day when you showed me that huge bottle of vitamins you've been eating on the daily! I don't want anything to happen to you... :nope:

Yeah you are right, and thats why you have to be careful and calculate all your supplements including diet, but that percentage is calculated by the FDA which is usually very under rated. The recommended DV of Vit C is .6mg on a multi, mine have 300mg which is 500%. Ive read the benefits of increasing that for connective tissue issues and obviously ammune fuctions, I take an additional 8000mg during heavy training, usually back it off to 4000mg if lighter phase. So my daily intake is as high as 8600mg with the multis. But you are right crg, you gotta read all, I found out I was accidently taking too much selinum because a new joint complex I was taking had it in it, plus the multi, plus I was taking selinum. I was like 100mcg above what can be toxic. No issues but thats what happens.

Not saying your wrong many people take that much Vitamin C i just dont think its needed. 500mg's is most of the time more then sufficient and your not really gaining anything by taking that much.

Major Symptoms of Vitamin C Overdose

Recent studies have suggested that there are a number of health related problems that can occur as the result of too much Vitamin C consumption, contrary to popular belief. This is especially true for people who take more than 6000mg a day, or those who take additional supplements along with high doses of Vitamin C. Major Symptoms of a dangerous Vitamin C Overdose include:

Kidney stones
Vitamin B-12 deficiencies
Copper deficiencies
Increased need for oxygen
If you experience or notice any of these symptoms, discuss your Vitamin C intake with your doctor immediately. Do not alter your dosage on your own, though. Dramatically altered levels of Vitamin C in the body can result in numerous health hazards.

Long Term Problems Due to Vitamin C Overdose

Vitamin C Overdose might not result in immediate death, but the long term problems that a Vitamin C Overdose can instigate can result in premature death. A list of serious long term problems caused by Vitamin C Overdoses includes:

Acute Right-Sided Conjunctivitis
Kidney Diseases
Diabetes
Hypoglycemia

A good thing to do every few months or so is don't take a multi vitamin and drink ONLY Distilled water. That will help reduce minerals in your body that may be built up from tap water, foods and vitamins we take etc..

Good point, I actually stopped taking any form of vitamin for quite awhile now and actually feeling BETTER now that I have stopped taking them.. I've also seen a lot of new studies saying the benefits of Multi-vitamin use may be exaggerated by any healthy individual. I think I saw it a few weeks ago.

Good info GS. I'll always listen to an objective point of view. Its amazing, every body and everyone is different. Ive tried what other do, and people try my way. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. My buddy wanted to try my supplement routine, puked his brains out both days after taking, I was laughing my ass off. Its not that crazy, his body just wasnt havin it. To each his own I guess.
