The heavyweight fight between Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis has been pulled from Saturday night’s card in Las Vegas.
According to multiple sources speaking to MMA Fighting on Friday, Blaydes tested positive for COVID-19, which obviously forced the UFC to cancel the main event. There’s early talks about rescheduling the heavyweight fight for a later date in December but nothing has been determined yet.
The news was first reported by ESPN.
Blaydes and Lewis were put on a collision course following recent wins where both fighters mentioned interest in the fight.
Currently riding a four-fight win streak, Blaydes has been on a mission to earn a heavyweight title shot while taking out opponents such as Junior dos Santos and Alexander Volkov in recent performances. The only blemishes on Blaydes’ UFC record are a pair of losses to Francis Ngannou but otherwise he’s been undefeated with 10 victories inside the octagon.
As for Lewis, the former heavyweight title contender has picked up three wins in a row capped off by a knockout over Aleksei Oleinik in his most recent outing.
Unfortunately it appears both Blaydes and Lewis will have to wait until a later date to potentially clash now that their main event fight has been cancelled.
The current co-main event for the UFC Vegas 15 card features a light heavyweight showdown between Anthony Smith and Devin Clark.
