Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC Mackenzie Dern has always been considered a top prospect but she may have just graduated to legitimate contender with her latest win at UFC Vegas 23.
The Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist needed less than five minutes to take Nina Nunes to the ground and wrap up the armbar submission to get the finish, which was also her fourth consecutive win in a row overall. The tap from Nunes came at 4:48 into the opening round as Dern also wraps up her fourth submission inside the octagon.
“It feels so good,” Dern said after the win. “Nina is such a great girl. Nina is so respectful. I look up to her so much. The fact that we’re both moms, I have a really good connection because of that.
“Anyone in the top 10 [next], top five would be even better.”

As soon as the fight started, Dern was pressing the action, throwing heavy shots on the feet and then latching onto a leg to bring Nunes down to the canvas. From the top, Dern was methodical while displaying her grappling acumen as she started setting up submissions without giving up her dominant position.
Dern eventually advanced to the mount where she began hammering away with punches while setting up one of her signature submissions.
Sure enough, Dern eventually grabbed onto an arm and fell back to the mat as she sought to finish the fight before the first round came to a close.
While Nunes valiantly attempted to hold off the submission, Dern eventually broke the lock that was protecting the arm as she fell back into the submission with the tap coming just a split second later.
From the day she arrived in the UFC, Dern was expected to eventually become a threat to the top of the strawweight division and she’s definitely living up to that hype with her last few performances. Considering the way she just took out a top five ranked opponent, Dern undoubtedly got the attention of the rest of the strawweight division with this latest win.
