In one of the more casual callouts you’ll ever see, O’Malley posted a video to his YouTube channel where he pulled into his driveway in a dirt-covered Nissan Altima, stepped out wearing a wrestling singlet, took a hit and mapped out why a fight between he and former champion Dominick Cruz should be next.
“What’s up, Dom? Heard you’re looking for a big fight,” O’Malley said. “Who’s a bigger fight than me right now?
“Cory [Sandhagen] is about to beat the EPO out of T.J. [Dillashaw], Rob [Font] is about to knock out Cody [Garbrandt] for the seventh time this year. Petr [Yan] is disqualified for cheating, Aljo’s still knocked out from the knee. Who’s the bigger fight?
Both O’Malley and Cruz bounced back from recent losses with victories in their first 2021 appearances. O’Malley knocked out Thomas Almeida at UFC 260, while Cruz earned a unanimous decision against O’Malley’s training partner Casey Kenney three weeks earlier at UFC 259.
After earning a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series in July 2017, the 26-year-old O’Malley earned decisions in his first two octagon appearances before consecutive knockout wins over Jose Quinones and Eddie Wineland in 2020. In August, “Sugar” suffered the first and only loss of his career after a Marlon Vera leg kick led to a TKO win for “Chito” in the first round at UFC 252.
