Esther Lin, MMA Fighting It appears Francis Ngannou will only have to wait for a few more months to finally get his rematch with UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.
According to UFC president Dana White, the promotion is currently targeting a March date for the highly anticipated showdown between Miocic and Ngannou. White cautioned that the fight wasn’t a done deal just yet but that’s the timeline when the UFC hopes to book the rematch.
“That fight won’t be ready till March,” White told TMZ when asked about the heavyweight title fight. “It could [happen in March] yeah, that’s the goal. We’ll see what happens.”
Ngannou recently expressed his discontent with waiting until March after spending only 20 seconds in the octagon during 2020 after he quickly dispatched Jairzinho Rozenstruik in his most recent performance. He was promised the next title shot but had to wait until Miocic and Daniel Cormier settled their trilogy in August.
Miocic ultimately won that fight to cement his status as champion, but he engaged in a five-round war with Cormier, which then required time off to rest and recover after a grueling battle.
Afterwards, Miocic didn’t seem all that interested in a rematch with Ngannou after he soundly defeated the heavyweight knockout artist in 2018. On that night, Miocic earned a lopsided decision over Ngannou to defend his title.
Despite those objections it seems the UFC is doubling down on efforts to book Miocic against Ngannou for a second time with the fight being targeted for March 2021.
