? about proscar "finasteride"

I was starting to thin up on top from cycling for over a year. I started using proscar and it seemed as if I stopped losing hair. I decided to stay off gear for a while and my hair is coming back in.

My question is that I did not have this problem until I upped my dose and stayed on for over a year. Is it best to keep taking the proscar year round or can you quit if not using gear?

If its growing back then I say stay on it. That's just me. when I am on I take 2.5mg 2Xper day and when I am of I take 2.5mg 1Xper day.

i have heard that proscar only slows down the process.....like your going to lose the hair, but the proscar just slows it down and keeps the folicles from closing. I guess this reasoning is that some say AAS only speeds up the balding process.

Im not really familiar with the product....so help me out by all means guys

proscar blocks the conversion from Testosterone to DHT - dihydrotestosterone. In most men, hair follicles on the head are sensitive to DHT. Basically DHT causes them to shut down over time. Some guys are much more sensitive to this than others. And for the most part, once the follicles are turned off, they stay off.

proscar inhibits an enzyme 5 alpha reductase that facilitates the conversion. It does not do 100% effective job. I think it's more like 70%, but I could be wrong. Dutasteride is much more effective, but it is considerably more expensive and if I recall has additional sides.

downside of all this, is that DHT is considerably more potent than "plain old T". Also, there are some guys out there who report all kinds of awful side effects from Proscar. Seems sort of like the problems associated with silicone boob implants - some people are convinced that they're real, some people think they have nothing to do with the silicone.

I've been taking proscar for ages. Never noticed any problems. It's not a miracle drug, but it does slow down the hair loss, which is worth it for me.

If you plan on cycling while on proscar keep an eye on gyno. I have had several freinds have to bag cycles becasue of this, seems that even at the same doses the cycle with proscar will yeild more problematic sides like gyno, so just keep some anti's on hand and watch for the early signs.

What were you taking in your cycle? This can make a difference.
Just cyp and enanth, with either EQ or Tren. The problem I think came when I stayed on for over a year without coming off. I mean I did pct therapy in between. I have been off for a couple months and doing fine now. At one point every time I took a shower I noticed losing alot of hair. Once I started taking the finasteride it stopped and I also used a dht blocker on my hair follicles. It seems as if my hair is coming back in. At least it is not very noticeable now.

That is why I was wondering if I should stay on the proscar. I don't know which of the 2 products brought my hair back. Hell some people say their hair grows back when they stop taking gear!

OK. I've really been through it all. I take Propecia, Minoxidil, Spironolactone, and use Nizoral shampoo. I've also had a $5,000 hair transplant. As you might be able to tell, I don't take losing my hair lightly.

It's good to see that you're taking test. This is the easiest to combat with simply Propecia or Proscar (same thing, different doseage). This is because as other people have mentioned, the 5AR enzyme. Proscar will stop the DHT conversion. What I do is stay on the four I mentioned above year round. When I do a cycle, I switch the Propecia to Proscar to get the additional 4mg of finasteride.

If you stick to test, you should be fine, but unfortunately, it doesn't make for the best cycle. If you add Deca it can get very tricky because Deca converts to a less hair toxic metabolite in the scalp. This conversion is catalyzed by an enzyme which is inhibited by Propecia/Proscar, so taking Propecia actually INCREASES Deca's hair toxicity. If you're going to go on Deca, you should go off of the finasteride.

Regarding the AAS that are already DHT derivatives (winstrol, primo, etc.), finasteride won't do any good, but it won't hurt. This is where spironolactone and nizoral shampoo comes in. Use these and you've covered your bases.

Remember, once you go on finasteride, you don't ever want to go off. Your hairloss will quickly catch up to where you would have been if you never used finasteride in the first place.

Great info! What hair transplant surgery did you have done?

Hey Chotto alot of people says it kills their sex drive. What do you do to combat this?

I don't notice any changes in my sex drive cuz I have always been ramped up for it. When I am ON obviously there is no issue and when I am off I take Tribulus so I am sure that helps too. I did notice slightly less volume during ejaculation, but regular HCG and Nolva usage keeps it pumpin. LOL!

I had the hair transplant from MHR (medical hair restoration). It's the same as the Bosley Institute. I am very happy with it. I stopped going to the girl that cut my hair just before I got it done and had my wife cut my hair for about a year after the surgery. I eventually went back to her and she wasn't able to tell I had the surgery except for the scar on the back of my head. My scar is a little bigger than normal because I started doing bench press and neck rolls not too long after the surgery. I probably should have waited longer, but I was dying to get back training after a 2 week layoff (longest break in 15 years). As long as I don't cut my hair really short anyways, you're not able to see the scar.

I've never had any issues with the finasteride and any sexual side effects. The only thing that I did notice was that I wasn't quite as strong when I first started taking it. This is probably because DHT is actually very anabolic. The loses were very minimal so it didn't bother me.

It will definitely stop hair loss on most people. It will grow back hair on some. I think that it is really important to use finasteride in combination with Minoxidil (Rogaine). It has a synergist effect that can be beneficial. Minoxidil is really cheap now too. I pay $20 at Costco for the generic version and with 2 doses/day, it lasts me four months.
