Passed out

So I passed out at the gym today and don't know why. I mean I have my suspicions, not to hard to figure out. I took some shit before I went that I have never tried, don't know if it played a role. Prior I ate a small meal, carbs mostly and took creatine ester with nitric oxide and other shit in it as well. It kind of made me feel on edge, a bit uncomfortable feeling in my own skin, very jittery. I was doing squats and feeling strong and decided to go for a personal record. I banged out 425 for 6 reps. I racked the bar, just feeling like normal when exerting yourself. As I stepped back I just saw stars and briefly passed out. I was lucky I did not land of my face or anything, I was able to just go to my knees. I recovered and finished my workout fine but I was a bit worried after that thinking what if this happens to me again when I have the weight on my back? Any input?

Are you positive it's due to the stuff you took? I get that feeling a lot when I'm working legs...doing Squats mostly. After I bang out the weight I get this feeling of lightness in my head like I'm going to pass out. I also take caffeine pre-workout, but again, it seems to only happen on leg days. My only suggestion would be to Squat using a cage. PUt the bar through about 2" lower than you would normally go down so it doesn't interfere with your set, but if you ever did pass out with the weight on your shoulders it would stop the weight from coming down on you. I do this also so I can go to failure and not worry about not getting that last rep.

I get that sometimes with the overhead barbell press. For me it is tied to my BP. If it is high, I hear nothing but a rushing sound and get a bit light headed. I never pushed it so far I passed out. I would check your BP. If it is high, then your answer is pretty straightforward and it is probably gear related.

I always use a cage for squats. The bar bends a bit when I do heavy squats (for me that is over 600), and one collar won't keep the plates on the bar. I had a real scare once; I am pretty sure that if I didn't stop when I did - even in a cage - I would have been screwed.

It could also be that you didn't have enough calories in you prior to working out, thus your blood sugar was a little low. That combined with the sudden drop in blood pressure after a heavy set is what probably caused you to pass out for a second. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have a history of that myself. I've been able to make sure it doesn't happen to me by eating enough prior to a workout.

Take your shit and dont workout and see if you pass out or not.... if not its prob BP, or maybe you were just physically exhauseted... I wouldn't worry abotu it bro

I get light headed when taking caffeine pills on an empty stomach. Never passed out though [knocking on wood]. Be careful with that $hit bro.

It may have had to do with straining as well. There is a vaso-vagal reflex that may cause you to pass out when exerting yourself or straining when lifting. It is pretty harmless as it is a reflex, but dangerous when you have weight on your back. Squat cage is a good idea.

ive come close today i was doing squats and when i got done i was really light headed and i just got a carb drink and picked up a little but got that way again. do you think this is could be associated with high bp. or just pushing myself pretty hard didnt pass out but just felt diff.

Had my bd checked and it was perfect. I think is was just exerting myself. I ate like I usually do about 45 minutes before with low protein and plenty of carbs. One thing I hate is that my gym does not have a cage, I always wish there was one. They have those crappy little step stands for the bars instead. Probobly why I don't go to failure on squats like I wish I could. Smith only goes up to 400-thats whats on the front of it. Plus now that it's after New Years there are plenty of dicks who don't know what they are doing much and fuck around with all the machines to no end.

Must have been the reflex that kdog mentioned then. When you do that whether intentionally or not, your bp goes really high, and then when you let go, bp releases and you can pass out if it goes low enough.

I agree. I experienced something similar breaking a PR on deadlifts. It was 3 reps so heavy, even for me.

I thought I was gonna be snoozing before I got the 3rd one up but I managed to not pass out. I probably held my breath on the ascent of the last rep.

not much to input other then i wanted to jump in say that under NO circumstances should anyone ever take slin prior to doing legs,i wouldnt even recomend slin prior to any workout but alot of guys do it and with great success, but when it comes to legs please never do slin before the workout

not saying thats what you took, but wanted to point this out since alot of guys pass out when they shoot slin prior to workjing out and especialy on leg days, just thought i would toss that out there, been around long enough to see this happen to a few guys in jersey area all of wich were very luck not to get seriously hurt, but the possiblity of a major injury was always possible in each case and even more so the possibilty of hurting others around you

so what was the culprit for this in ur opinion bro?

That happened to me after taking some "energy" pills and doing heavy legs. Sometimes the body just gives out.

I would consult a doctor still.

Not to jack the thread, but Presser makes a very, very important point here. Exercising affects how fast slin will act. This little clip is from a web link I have on it:

Q: Does exercise affect absorption?

A: Yes. Exercise of a given muscle area after injection of insulin into that area will cause the insulin to be absorbed faster. Exercise in general burns up blood glucose, lessening the need for insulin to digest it, thus increasing the effect of injected insulin. Massage of the injection site after injection can help speed absorption.

Because legs have large muscles, this effect will be intensified.
