Third Bulgarian athlete tests positive for anabolic steroid
SOFIA (AFP) — Bulgarian middle-distance runner Teodora Kolarova has tested positive for anabolic steriods, state BTA news agency reported Friday.
The results of the test come only months after two other Bulgarian athletes were suspended for the same substance by the world athletics' governing body, the IAAF.
Kolarova, 23, who came sixth in the 800m in the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, tested positive for excessive levels of the anabolic steroid testosterone during an out-of-competition test on June 26.
Kolarova has been provisionally suspended by the IAAF since August, despite claiming that she never took any banned substances as an abnormal level of testosterone was also confirmed in her B urine sample.
The Bulgarian Athletics Federation will review the athlete's case on October 26.
Kolarova is the third Bulgarian athlete trained by the same coach, Georgy Dimitrov, to be provisionally suspended by the IAAF within the past months.
In mid-July, European women's 400m champion Vanya Stambolova, 23, and high jump silver medallist Venelina Veneva, 33, were also sanctioned after failing similar dope tests for testosterone.
The two athletes took their case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which will hear it on December 14.
