Students at a 30-minute Kickboxing Express class at a Reebok Sports Club.

<NYT_TEXT><NYT_CORRECTION_TOP></NYT_CORRECTION_TOP>UNTIL recently, I was convinced that a worthwhile workout meant at least an hour. But my trainer challenged me to consider 20- to 30-minute programs that she promised would push me just as hard as our 60 minutes together. When these high-intensity sessions of jumping rope and other powerful movements became even more strenuous than my longer routines, I was a convert.
Gyms around New York City were onto this idea well before I was: several offer shorter classes for those who are pressed for time or who simply don’t want to spend their lives in the gym.
The Reebok Sports Club/NY on the West Side of Manhattan, for example, has a half-hour Kickboxing Express class that its creator, Emma Paynter, said would require more effort than the traditional hourlong one.
“Since the class is so short, the intensity is revved up a notch,” she said. Students perform moves without resting, like punching arms, kicking in different directions, squatting rapidly, running in place and doing jumping jacks.
Uma Muthu Vlahoplus, a 46-year-old screenwriter who lives on the Upper East Side, said that attending the class regularly had helped her maintain her prepregnancy figure.
“I work every body part,” she said. “And since it’s much easier for me to carve out 30 minutes out of my day than an hour, I don’t have an excuse not to go.”
At Crunch Fitness, the 30-minute classes include Ripped Rotation and Sexy Stretch. In Ripped Rotation, instructors lead students through endurance-testing core moves using a six-pound weight with a flat end, called a Smart Bell. To work their lower abdominals, participants lift their legs, bend their knees, balance the weight on their shins and extend their legs without dropping the weight.
The quick moves give Steve Batista, a 42-year-old dog walker from Washington Heights, the rush he seeks when he works out. “The class gets my heart rate up quickly, which is what I love about exercising,” he said.
Physique 57, the popular workout based on the ballet barre, has a 40-minute version of its hourlong class, called the Physique Express. It starts with push-ups, planks, triceps dips and biceps curls and progresses into moves that work other muscles.
Shorter sweat sessions aren’t offered only as classes. New York Sports Clubs locations also have XpressLine, a free program supervised by trainers in which members work through machines in 22 minutes or less to hit every muscle group.
Personal trainers are also willing to cut their standard hourly sessions in half to trim the price and be more flexible. My trainer, Annette Lang, based in Brooklyn, said she pushed her clients in 30-minute sessions by incorporating moves that work multiple body parts at once, like squat with biceps curls and overhead presses followed by squat jumps.
“Working out for a short time can be even harder than a longer session,” she said.
After finally trying it, I can attest to the rigors of a compressed routine and the joys of finishing a workout that much more quickly.

High intensity training is the way to go for fat loss. At the gym I used to work with, I convinced management to let me try out boot camp style classes and I had great results and would keep getting more people in there each week. Our classes were only like 30 minutes, but it depended primarily on how many people were there. I'd set up an exercise station for each person, they'd do the exercise for 60 seconds and get a 10 second break and move on to the next one. At the end, you'd be covered in sweat, beat down, but after a couple months, you'd be more fit than most of your friends and have a good cardiovascular system. I strongly believe in this type of training to burn fat and get in shape

Yea, the first time I did the boot camp class, I almost puked too, but I was extremely out of shape as far as cardio went

want a routine that will kick your ass? Try Bas Rutten's all around fitness routine...if you can make it 20 min. you are a cardio machine

you ever been hit by one of those? Feels like you have to shit, piss, puke and pass out all at the same time

when sparring at 50% I got kicked there from a short guy thast was standing like a foot and a half away.... flexible bastard that shit hurt and was a surprise

At my old school I trained at I too was rifled with a kick there, It was landed with ut-most percision by a much smaller training partner. I never felt anything like it before then, or even to this day. Besides the time I was kicked in the nuts super hard when I was a teen from my sister, I thought that was the worst thing ever as I seen Jesus and the light before my eyes. These two areas are neck in neck on the pain scale if you ask me!

lol!!! The first time I was kicked in the nuts was kindergarten, some kid just randomly did it, I remember the hurt and can replay the whole thing in my head, he ran away right away and I couldnt catch him, so I waited like 10 minutes and his guard was down so I kicked him in the nuts, much harder though, than growing up my neighbor did that shit to me like 3 or 4 times, hopefully I can have kids still!

ha ha that's fuckin great:gold:

LoL, that shit is funny as hell. One of the guys I work with was just telling me yesterday how when he and his friends were younger they had a habit of just punching or kicking each other in the nuts all the time. I know I would be pissed if I always had to be on guard for that shit

No joke, it was one of the worst things I ever been through. I couldn't breath, and I believe I shit my pants somewhere in between crawling down the hall-way floor and mid-way to the toilet bowl, where I unleashed a fury of projectile vomit consisting of Lucky Charms and Chocolate Milk! :puke:

I always since a child had a natural ability with good kicks and such, and at a young age I was enrolled in in Taekwondo, and advanced to muay-thai at the same school. I was show boating to my sisters friend, my sister asked one of those random questions like " what would you do if I did this?" So, I showed her,she countered with a kick I never seen coming, nor knew where it come from. I still think to this day think it was her friend from behind who nailed me blind sided.

We did that shit at beer parties and such, but you dont hit hard, you do it lightly, just a flick, and no joke it would hurt like hell. It slowly comes on, and you feel sick to your stomach. You ever get a lite tap to the nuts, and it cripples you? We modified the game, by adding a twist. If your sitting down or standing dont matter, and you make a circle with your fingers like doing the OK sign, and place it on your knee cap or elbow, and if someone looks at the circle you are displaying, they have to put their finger fast as they can in that circle before you move it ( with-in reaching distance to be fair), or they get a flee-flick ( nut slap ), or a few punches to the their arm of your choice! WTF? The dumb shit we did, I hated that game after a long while, it become combat and you would get the shell shock.

yeah it was a newpain for me, a different level, it felt like someone whiped my sack with 80 grit sandpaper

I got kicked in the nuts in middle school... I felt like coughing them out of my throat it hurt that bad.
