Vodka and beer

Ok so explain this to me. Literally almost all the jacked mofo's I know drink heavily at least once or twice a week and a lot of them have a couple beers or shots at night after training almost daily. It is usually low calorie beer or vodka. Does alcohol not get in the way of recovery?

I know that vodka is great because it does not interrupt ketosis and actually promotes it, but it is still an empty calorie that can't be used as glycogen right?

I will say this though, when I drink, I have noticed that I eat way cleaner and a couple beers or shots cannot be worse than eating a bowl of ice cream right?

Lots of studies show that drinking messes up recovery, but I'm not sure how well they were conducted since most have compared a meal post workout with getting drunk. Obviously, the meal will win. But I wonder if they compared having say 5 beers with a meal after training if the same effect would occur.

Further studies show that people who drink have better insulin sensitivity, overall health, less body-fat, more energy, less stress, healthier hearts, and many more positive results.

Anecdotally, One of the strongest motherfuckers I know literally spent all December going keto in the am (but 6k calories ed), training insane at night, eating cleanish carbs and protein after the training, then getting fucked up into a coma and repeating this several times a week. He recently almost broke a world record in powerlifting. This guy is also leaner and more muscular than me. His drink of choice was almost always vodka.

Another friend, one of the biggest bodybuilders I know, drank 2-3 times a week, even on orals and never had any issues.

Can somebody clear this up for me or want to comment?

I thought alcohol in general lowered testosterone, pretty sure i seen a study posted here many years ago stating that, then again theirs always 50 studies contradicting one another with everything you can think of, lol, but yeah i think beer is awfule for serious bodybuilders or fitness enthusiasts of all kind.

I did however drink on weekends for a good few months but i only drank Grey Goose and OJ, never beer, as i hate the bloat i get, and vodka was clean and to the point of getting buzzed, and sometimes violent unfortunatly lol

Huh beer dries me out. And there was a study showing that alcohol consumption post workout raised testosterone actually, but like you said there are so many contradicting studies.

So the vodka never slowed your progress?

well look at it like this, alcohol replaces oxygen (that's why you get drunk)

less oxygen means slower recovery

if your going to drink throw in some milk thistle or Liv 52...that being said I drink, sometime too much, last time I got my blood test done the liver values were fine

read somewhere once, not sure if I believe this, but the study said that injectable test actually helped protect the liver

don't know how because that's the purpose of injecting is to by pass the liver-though in the long run it still gets processed through the liver

I guess my opinion stands like this... having a couple beers or shots on a regular basis won't do anything to gains or recovery. It could potentially help if it prevents you from eating a bunch of shit later. And occasionally getting tipsy won't have much of a net effect either. Vodka is by far the best choice for athletes since it doesn't interrupt ketosis and has no carbs. We all know drinking yourself into a coma isn't going to help you out and probably will hurt. And most of the jacked guys I know drink on a regular basis.

I check my liver and everything else at the very least once a month just because that's what I do for a living. With that being said, my liver enzymes have only been slightly elevated once. In week 4 of 60mg of Dbol everday. I am a regular drinker. What I mean by that is I drink 1 to 3 drinks a night when I get home from work. I'm a Margarita man cause I don't like beer. I just enjoy winding down my day with some Tequila. If my day was hectic enough, I'll have a shot with my first one. I workout 2 days on and 1 day off RELIGIOUSLY!!!
I have never had alcohol affect my recovery, but then again I drink to wind down. I don't drink to get drunk. Getting drunk would have an adverse affect on me, but I cant speak for anyone else. Getting drunk would cause me to feel like shit the next morning and probably affect my appetite the next morning as well. At my age, I believe the 2 meals I usually get in before I head to the gym and after to work helps fuel my workouts and my day. So, drinking isnt the real hinderance of recovery as much as drinking too much would be.

Just my 2 cents brothers.....

I think that its all about the total picture. If you're trying to be Mr Olympia, you'd probably want to avoid alcohol. That being said I doubt a couple drinks now and then to wind down is going to hurt. I think the choices you make while drunk are worse than the actual alcohol. That being said I try to keep it to a minimum when training. On vacations I inject more Grey Goose than all other food and liquid combined!!! Damn the liver!

Very well said Brutha!!! Absolutely excellent...;)

like everything else, moderation. Its when people abuse something you start having problems. I havent drank in years
but remember the hangovers screwed up my diet and workout the next day. Remember having a couple of beers after
work and then to the gym and having great workouts. Figured it was just the carbs. lol

yeah right, dbol turns you into a tank? that's a bit more than it does. Maybe anadrol, not dbol
I've never tried drol brother. How high have you gone on the dbol?

Yeah, just to clarify, I'm not advocating getting drunk. There's no way getting drunk on a regular basis will do anything but hurt training.

Who's to say lol, I mean I was jacked as fuck during my short drinking phase, would i have been a pound or two heavier or more conditioned without the weekend warrior shit for a few months, maybe, maybe not lol, I will say this , i never drank during show prep or anything like that, as I'm sure it hinders ur recovery and gains somehow,

60/day drol is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better

Staying in ketosis while drinking alcohol is not going to happen. Alcohol, whether it's from vodka, wine, or beer has a huge impact on blood glucose and why alcoholism usually leads to diabetes.

And one last thing before the thread dies, y'all should check out Devotion vodka - 2g of casein protein per shot haha. The guy who owns the company is jacked too.

just checked them out, looks like they are marketing it like a sports drink-same thing Michelob Ultra did and they made a fortune
