The lats are one of my favorite muscle groups to train and they’re also extremely fascinating to research.
-
💥 Biomechanical and electromyographical studies have shown that the lats probably have three unique regions that play different roles in shoulder adduction and extension throughout a range of motion. Bodybuilders have often focused on dividing the lats into at least two sections, so that practice is definitely a good idea.
-
💥 Lastly, the lats are about a 50-50 split between fast twitch and slow twitch fibers. Therefore, I’d use a wide rep range for the lats and I’d also allow at least 2-days of recovery between back workouts to ensure they’re ready to go again.

▪️ Based on: Paoli, A., Pacelli, Q. F., Cancellara, P., Toniolo, L., Moro, T., Canato, M., ... & Reggiani, C. (2016). Protein supplementation does not further increase latissimus dorsi muscle fiber hypertrophy after eight weeks of resistance training in novice subjects, but partially counteracts the fast-to-slow muscle fiber transition.
