Fitness first... real, usable, functional fitness. The type of thing that you can USE in real life. When you have to push the fridge out of the way to paint the kitchen, you probably wouldn't sit in a chair, torso fully-supported, and push using just your chest and arms, right? Sadly, most weight training regimes focus on isolating a muscle (so it'll look real nice), but in real-life movements, muscles are very rarely used in isolation. So for me... I just can't see the real functional point in doing a whole lot of isolation movements. Then again, I'm not a bodybuilder, and tend to take an athletic approach to training (anyone else out there??)
I want to be able to run on a marathon relay team, climb a mountain, or enter a local adventure race at a moment's notice and not die trying.
For me it is all about functional fitness. Besides, the whole "looking-good" thing is just a nice side effect that happens when you achieve a fit body!
