Any advice on re-strengthening my knee?

I broke my knee in July. It happened three weeks after having my ACL repaired which I tore while snowboarding. I am having a hard time getting my quad muscle built back up. I have virtually lost all muscle in my left leg. It's been 4 months now, and I figure that should have been enough healing time, but I still can't hardly press even 20 lbs! Any idea's on strengthening would be greatly appreciated!

you need to start out slowly by doing light exercises to make sure your knee can support the pressure. Once you feel comfortable start adding more weight and increasing reps and sets. Just make sure you are comfortable with the added pressure and don't re-injure the knee. Check with your doctor to make sure you have given it enough time to heal and he says its ok to workout on it. Good quad muscle exercises include squats (go easy here), leg extensions, lunges, leg presses. Just be careful and take your time don't try to rush back into it after an injury like that. You will want to start off on machines such as the smith machine for squat and lunges until your comfort level is to the point you can really stress the muscles again.
