Pre-competition workouts

I'm thinking about incorporating some new exercises into my workouts now. I'm 9 weeks out from my contest. My thinking is that doing different exercises that my muscles aren't used to will help me hold on to more size or possibly even keep growing while I'm dieting. Or will the process of forcing the muscles and neural pathways to "learn" new movements along with the less than optimal poundages used during this learning period be counterproductive? I'm especially concerned about the loss of leg mass due to cardio.

good point

I reccomend swtiching things up not only like you stated but just to keep your sanity!lol............. I use alot of drop sets at 6 weeks out on in. this i believe forces more blood into the muscles. As for the cardio, loss of legg mass. well if you calories are high enough i shouldnt be a factor.. First how intence is the cardio and how often! I personaly need to do cardio. I have starrd doing it farther out from the contest! not only for the conditioning factor but because of my age also>

I dont feel that double session of cardio will cause you to loose the size in your legg but doing that with one legged squats 5-6 times a week will.( it happen to me) . i say do the cardio!

I don't have a heart rate monitor, but when I check my pulse at the end of my cardio sessions it's at about 80% of max. Starting this week (9 weeks out) I'm doing 40 minutes 5 days a week.
I was going to try adding front squats to my workout yesterday. I couldn't keep the bar from sliding down my arms, so that one's out, but I'm going to try some different things these last two months.

agree w/dpsquat. I like the drop sets and supersets since they raise metabolism just about like cardio does. I'll also hit the flex-n-hold sets on concentration exercises like wide grip rows(back), cable crossovers(chest), leg extensions (quads), leg curl (hammies), standing cable curls (using both sides of the cable crossover machine...if you know what I mean)

i do

I do alot of the same stuff myself! because of my schedual i train alone so i try and and push myself with other tricks!

yup...training alone works best for me....I've never found anyone that can shut up and just workout for gods sake, lol. I just think about everyone looking at me like some freak and find ways to hurt myself and make funny faces, LMAO!

I do bout the same as dp and b....lots of drop sets higher reps, hit the cardio after workout. I was blessed w/great legs so they naturally stay lean and nice year round and I am one of those guys who thinks bout dropping calories I will loose weight...good luck bro

I do the same thing at times!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think sometimes I may even scare people away from talking to or approaching me I think because of the fucked-up expressions I make when I'm writhing with pain and just a hair away from failure and injury, LOL... There seems to be only a handful of folks that will actually even look at me in the eye if I look at them...f-in weird, no?

I don't do anything any different during precontest vs. offseason training. I haven't done a drop set or super set in about 10 years. I am a straight set kind of guy. A bit boring I suppose too. ;)
