Squats with chains?

I saw a commercial, and also an story on Kobe Bryant's workout routine, it showed him doing squats with big chains around the ends of the bar.

Whats the point in that? I was thinking it would decrease the load as he went down, and increase the load as he went up, and be easier on the knees. Or maybe work stabilizer muscles.

Anyone know for sure?

I've used them for bench, the idea is you have less weight getting it off your chest and the weight will increase as you go up. Never seen them used for squats.

That's kind of what I thought but wasn't sure.

I was suprised at how strong he is as thin as he still is. He hired some famous trainer this past off season, he put on 15 pounds over the summer. That trainer said the program he has designed for him will take 6 years.

I think it was to make him look like a forkin' tough guy.....he'll never beat Jordan, though, I don't care how many chains he puts on those fake 45 lb. plates

It is more or less used for acceleration. It takes the weight off at the bottom, when u come to the top it gets heavier. Part of the WestSide powerlifting program.

guess im the only powerlifter

There is a bro in my gym that uses them as well as resistance bands. Your theory is correct. The bottom of the squat is your weakest point. By increasing the load as you go up you keep your body working close to it's max all the time. It will get you some strange looks also.
