About how much would it cost to open up a gym?

Me and a buddy were thinking about it. I know it would be a lot of money but how much do you think it would be? I don't want any luxury crap, just weights and a CD player to play Pantera, etc. and not the crap I have to listen to in my gym.

Two racks of dumbells going from 5-150lbs, 3 flat benches, 3 incline benchs, etc. The stuff you need. No "women" Nautilus equipment where you spread your legs to work your inner thigh. Just the mandatory shit.

As I think about it, it would probably be close to $200,000 in just the equipment alone.

I'd say $750,000 would make a decent gym.

Well my buddy has a gym and it cost him about 1,000,000 for all the equipment and the building. Nice gym though.

The best way to earn alot of money, is to rent a gym..you can rent the most professional gym..like Gold's or World's gym as low as $5000 to $10.000 per month..but you get like $100.000 in return. The location is the most important thing of it all..and good offers to bring people in..you can even put a banner on the wall which says "FREE ANABOLIC STEROIDS" :D, that would be cool wouldn't it..but if you want to buy the gym so it becomes your own property it's around $700.000 add extra $50.000 to $80.000, you do the math..remember big gyms there must be few owners..because one person cannot get approved for that credit amount unless you're very rich..but I'd rather open up a night club with that money..or even tanning place..

If you do decide to try it out, make up as detailed a business plan as you can possibly put together....and have projected incomes and losses spanning at least 3 years. Best thing to do is gather investors to back you who will be part of a board of directors and will take in a small percentage of your profits. That way, you could potentially get everything up and running without having to put forth any of your own capital. Another suggestion...LEASE YOUR EQUIPMENT!! That way, you can always have the newest, most up to date equipment to help generate new memberships

We were *thinking* about it but not seriously. I am 19 so I wouldn't even think about doing this now since it'd be over my head. I was kind of thinking once I retired, it would be nice to open up a gym and take part in that since weight lifting is a big part of my life.

Thanks for the replies.

If you ever get a gym that plays Pantera, I'll move there and be one of your first members. Mine plays Kelly Clarkson (yawn.)

If you are serious, you shoud go to a local college and tell a business professor you have a project for him. They will get their students to make up a plan, do all of the research, and present it back to you. This will give the students a worthwhile class project and help you along the way. It is worth looking into.

Trust me, I know how you feel when it comes to gym playing that kind of music. Some of it sounds like something you'd hear at a funeral! WTF? How the hell can you get psyched up to that?

If I had some more people interested, I would ask a professor to do that for his class and see what they came up with.
