Myself included...

I have been hearing more and more coverage in the media about the cost of obesity. It is sounding like insurance companies and govt. are gearing up to raise rates and taxes of those considered to be fat. Guess what they will most likely use to determine this? body fat? No way... much to simple and to the point. I believe they will use the BMI (body mass index). Unless you have the physique of an 11 year old girl, you will be considered over weight, and subject to higher rates and punitive taxation. As an example, a major insurance company describes my ideal weight to be around 186. C'mon, I crap bigger than that.
Be ready my brothers, to be lumped in with every couch potato who ever thought that cutting the grass once a week is plenty of exercise. We are all about to pay the price of having a better than average body. I doubt there will be any consideration given to guys who are heavey yet have a low bf. Why would they? It would cost them dollars to make that exception. besides, they are probably jealous and embarrased when their own wives look us over. Expect no quarter from the pencile necks on this one. All we can do is enjoy the satisfaction of their wives staring at us and the jealousy and embarrasement the geeks feel. Not much of a consolation, but I guess it's all we have.

OK, rant over, I feel better now. :D

You made a lot of valid points-I just upped my life insurance 2mo ago, when they 1st saw 6', 205 lbs the agent asked some questions(over the phone) when the nurse came out and did the pysical blood work etc they did give me the best rating so there is still hope...I think.

I got on a machine at the grocery store that figured body mass index, I forget what the # was, but it said I was modertely obese. At the time I was about 8% bodyfat.

I can see how insurance companies can raise prices for obese people, but just don't understand how this effects taxes.

How about charging people who smoke more on HEALTH insurance. All the tabacco companies and the lawsuits admit it's bad yet people who smoke don't have to pay any difference in health insurance. Therefore, why should some who is over weight have to pay more?

I'm pretty sure smokers have higher life and health insurance premiums. I know they do at least on life policies.

Considering I'm going to hafta pay my own health insurance when my education's finished, I'm kinda happy that insurance companies are going to zero in on the people who want to live a lazy life & expect us to pick up their health problems tab.
There's still time to make your concerns heard regarding what insurance companies will be using {BMI} to gauge who they consider to be obese. Contact your insurance company directly & start questioning it.. because you do have a valid point.
