The Great Barrier Reef

Why is human nature so backwards?
It's our backward attitude that waits til our natural icons are in horrid shape from our abuse before anyone can call attention to a problem with the environment.
Environmentalists must be very frustrated people.

I have noticed that Aussies are far better at recognising & acting on problems with the environment faster than us.
For example, they don't allow the waste that we do here.
You walk into a fast food place or whateva & you are handed one {1} napkin from the person behind the counter.

I was just very happy to see that the Great Barrier Reef is beginning to attract the necessary attention it needs.
This is one of the places I really wanted to see the next time I go to Oz.. I want to be able to put on some scuba gear {once I learn how to scuba} & explore parts of it and see all their neat fishies and sea creatures :D

Australia Extends Fishing Ban to Save Reef

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia said on Monday it will ban fishermen from about one third of the Great Barrier Reef to protect the world's largest living structure from the impact of man.

The coral reef, one of Australia's main tourist attractions with its magnificent array of tropical fish, is under threat from record high temperatures, over-fishing and pollution.

Environment Minister David Kemp said the plan would increase so-called green zones, where commercial and recreational fishing is banned, from five percent of the 2,000-km (1,200-mile) reef to over 30 percent, prompting instant protests from fishermen.

"The Great Barrier Reef is suffering very considerable pressures at the moment from increasing usage by tourists, by fishers, by the local communities," Kemp told reporters.

"It is very important that we give the reef proper protection for the future. The reef is Australia's greatest natural icon."

The Great Barrier Reef, situated off Queensland state in Australia's northeast, injects an estimated A$1.5 billion ($975 million) into the economy each year through tourism and fishing. Kemp said the plan, expected to be approved later this year, would boost the area subject to high protection to 44,020 square miles from 6,178 square miles, creating the world's largest network of protected marine areas.

This would help boost declining fish stocks by protecting crucial breeding grounds, he said, with companies caught breaching green zone rules facing a fine of up to A$1.1 million and individuals a maximum A$220,000 penalty.

But the expanded protection area only just meets scientists' estimates and environmentalists' demands that 30-50 percent of the World Heritage-listed reef be declared a sanctuary to sustain its long-term health.

Bob Brown, leader of the left-leaning Greens, said the plan needed to be backed up with action on land clearing and global warming (news - web sites) as chemical run-off from cattle grazing, sugarcane growing and urban development was polluting the reef.

"The federal government, by refusing to act on global warming and land clearing, is undermining and will ultimately overwhelm the work being done by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to increase protection for the reef," Brown said.

He warned coral bleaching was already affecting half the reef and by 2030, severe bleaching events could happen every year unless global warming was addressed -- criticizing the government for refusing to ratify the global Kyoto climate treaty.

Bleaching occurs when heat stresses coral, breaking down its symbiotic relationship with the algae that gives it color and helps it extract nutrients from the sea.

The commercial fishing industry warned the plan could devastate fishing firms and small communities.

"More fishermen will be competing over fewer fish," Duncan Souter, head of the Queensland Seafood Industry Association, said.

well, good to see someone gives a shit about our environment......this is, after all, the planet we have to LIVE on
Australia is actually facing the same problems we are here in the US in terms of overpopulation and encroachment into native wildlife's natural territory......

Steve Irwin's the freakin' man, baby.....that guy cares more and has done more for wildlife conservation and education than even Marlon Perkins or Jack Hannah

Sachet get going and get that certification any questions about scuba just ask me or badger we are both certified and I'd be glad to help ya out. Aus is one of my dream dives along with Figi and New Nealand. Done hawaii once would go again in a heart beat. Certification is very easy and once you have it you pretty much have it for life no minumal dives per year to stay certified.

yes, do it Sachet. We have some of the best diving in the world so near in the Carribean and Bahamas ect.

Dive trip!

sachet don't pick bigshug he's probally one of those really large clumsy guys that goes down there and has no boyancy and breaks all the coral LMAO ;)

You have to get a certificate to go scuba diving?? Where do u go to get something like that?

lol I dont think Ive ever seen a dive shop in NJ but they're probably here. Its not something you notice unless you're gonna do it. I don't know how I would do with going realy far under water and have to rely on a tank for oxygen. I would probably panic if I went down too far.lol Do u ever go snorkling?? That's a lot of fun to do.

basically the same sugaa they usally start you off in a pool first to see how you do. Pull the yellow pages out tomorrow and check it out you maybe surprised how many there are. Best things about diving no phones no noise except your bubbles from your regulator totally relaxing your in your own little world and time flys by.

mailboxkillr is right sugaa, I live in a town that's at least 3 hrs from the nearest beach, and we have dive certification places around......I've been told that they start you in a swimming pool to see how you do
