Okay. I am typing this email with my arm in a cast. Two weeks ago, I was in the softball game from HELL! My dumb-assed teammate didn't stop when I called him off a fly ball so there was a collision and glovehand ended up bent back. Last game of our losing season and I was excited to start training all summer. Now, I am watching what I eat and do cardio, but wanted to know if anyone could give me an ideal of some excercises I could do to at least keep the shoulders the same size. Bad enough my right arm is going to atrophy because it will be in a cast all summer. The thumb is covered in cast material and the only thing I can move freely are the fingers. Doc says the scaphoid bone has a fracture(this is one of the carpel bones in your wrist. Any suggestions are appreciated.

You should talk to your doc about how you can put pressure on you arm. IE if one direction is ok and other is not. You should still be able to train shoulders, depending where your cast is located you could still get some arms in too. I have sympothy for you my wife broke her leg about 3 months ago her cast comes off in a week.

If you have a standing calf raise machine where the pads rest on your shoulders you can use it to do shrugs instead. Also any lateral shoulder raise machines(Paramount, Hammer, Icarian etc) you do not need your thumb or hand/wrist to use them.

Jeeze! This is a tuffy because you really shouldn't put any stress on your wrist.
However, all the machines Greenie listed you should be able to do with no problem.
It's going to be really difficult for you, but you really need to allow your wrist to heal while it's in the cast without putting stress on it or you could end up developing arthritic problems as a result.
The best thingy to do is just try out different machines & if you're not using between your elbow & shoulder to manipulate them, don't use the machine.

Get well soon. Nothing worse than a cast in the summer !!

get well, i would take it easy, to keep from aggravating it, or possibly slowing the healing. This could be a good time to really hit your legs and abs.

You know I have read article where someone's arm is in a cast and they worked out their other arm, when the cast came off the hurt arm had grown too.

I want to thank everyone for their input. I am sorry to say that the CT scan came back with a definate break and Doc promptly switched my short cast to a full arm cast :( and there is a chance that I may need surgery if this thing does not heal at the end of the summer. I am telling you, my right side is ( or will be) put together with titanium screws. I am starting to feel like the "tin man" with screws in my knee and now my wrist probably. The only good thing is braces come off my teeth at the end of the summer. Will keep you posted and I guess it's the sit down cycle for me.
