Spoke with the wife......

For anyone that is interested, I finally got the balls to speak with my wife about my future competing. As you probably know, I am still phuked up with terrible nerve pain but it seems to SLOWLY be going away.

After a few beers (my current pain medication as they won't give me a damned thing for the pain), I dropped it on my wife that I would be competing Nov. 1st to secure my national qualification that has eluded me this year due to illness and an unbelievable field at the state show where I missed the qualification by 2 points. I expected a huge scene at the restaurant or she would calmly pack her bags in the middle of the night and leave (no joke here, either). However, she was actually supportive and encouraging stating that she understood completely and I would be stupid NOT to go to this show. I was..... shocked to say the least and added that I didn't think I would be going on our vacation back to our home state for two weeks in late August as it would interfere with my prep. Again, I expected the worst and she understood completely. I sat there wondering what the hell was going on as it just didn't seem right. She said that it is obvious how disappointing this year has been competitively and that even though it is tough on her during my prep, it is even tougher dealing with my disappointment. I suppose I should give her more credit than I have.

Anywho, as long as I can get this damned nerve pain under control, I will be back on track in a couple weeks...... hopefully.

Thanks for all of your support through this tough time. It is very much appreciated.

Glad that she is supporting you bro, that is how it should be and vice-versus. I'm sure she knows how important it is to you. Good luck with the pain.

Skip she sounds like a great base of support for you!!!!!! Ill keep your health in my prayers and will be rooting for your butt in NOv!

Good luck Skip.

I know how important it is to have your Wifes backing. I've been working on mine for awhile now after a 2 year Competitive layoff. Add an 8 year old son active in Hockey, Baseball, etc. & a 6 year old Daughter who is involved in Ballet, and things become more complex.

There's nothing more rewarding though, than to hear your Children cheering you from the Audience.

What show are you doing?

Thanks for the support, guys.

I can't say she is supportive BUT she seems to be right now. hehe

My competing (among other things) has been a bone of contention in the past couple years. She has her interests and I have mine. It is getting tougher as the years go by.

I have 3 children, also - 11, 5 and 3. I know what you mean about it being complex. It is a great feeling that chokes me up everytime I see my kids from backstage, waiting for me to come out. It is very rewarding.

My nerve pain is from the terrible case of shingles I developed coming off of my first show June 28th. The skin is clear but the nerve pain is terrible. I will say that I finally slept well last night so maybe this is an indication that things are subsiding a bit.

Thanks again, guys.

ADD: I will be doing the Rocky Mountain Bodybuilding Championships here in Denver. By all accounts, provided my conditioning is what it was in June (oh, and it WILL be), I should get my qualification. We shall see.

I have similar issues in my marriage but my wife has been an incredible support. I have the usual competing interests, a "normal" career, family life, 3 yo son and more but my wife has always understood the burning desire to compete.

Despite the usual squabbles of an 11 year marriage I love her dearly and intend to grow old together.

Best of luck with your show in November mate.

Those are nice words - thank you.

If you do get to Denver, be sure and let me know. I love to put a face to a name (or handle) from the boards. I appreciate the support and it comes in handy right about now.

Skip,
This is the kind of sport that if you're to put in 110% effort, you NEED a supportive (or at least understanding) wife. Just remember to try to put her 1st in your priorities, thats the best way to keep her behind you.
My wife and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversery on, of all days, 6/21 which is when I won my show. I told her 2 weeks before that I was giving her AT LEAST a class win trophy if not more (so the pressure was on me!)
And of course I slipped a note to the MC before going out to have him wish her a happy anniversery from me!
Anyway best of luck to you my friend with this next show.
