Mine starts all day pre-K next week. Going to miss the little bugger. Between him and my daughter, I've been home with a kid for 8 years while my wife works. I work afternoons to cut down on babysitting.

Yup, both of my kids start their pre-school next week.....it's my son's first year, my daughter's third.............how time flies - I forgot how "fun" it is to walk in and ALWAYS see your daughter in the time-out chair because she didn't use her "walking feet" or her "inside voice"............

OK, I'm really not criticizing anyone, but I have to get this rant off my chest:

NO ONE NEEDS PRESCHOOL. KIDS NEED TO BE HOME, NOT WAREHOUSED WHILE PARENTS GO OFF AND MAKE MONEY.

NO ONE NEEDS KINDERGARTEN. ANOTHER "GLORIFIED DAY CARE."

Whew,,,,,,,OK, had to say that.......I'm so tired of people having kids and then shipping them off somewhere else......We have 6 kids, and we homeschool them, so I guess I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum from most of you guys......

I know having your kids start school must freak you out. You know what freaks me out is my little 13 yr old sister is starting high school. That is right when my life went down hill. I don't want that to happen to her. I am scard for her she is a little cutie and all the guys are gonna try and take advantage of it. I"LL KILL A LITTLE BOY IF HE MESSES WITH MY SISTEEEERRRRRRRRRR!

I have sent my child to pre school for 4 years, He just started 1st grade, He can can read at a 3rd grade level, he is better on the PC then most 6th graders, He is an awesome athlete who plays soccer, football, baseball on teams with 8-10 yrs olds. I credit pre-school for a lot of that so you can not sit there and lump every pre-school etc together, Not everyone can have the option of staying home(read single parents etc) My .02

I knew my post would piss you off :( But you know what? I'll bet your son would have accomplished all those things without preschool. YOU could have read to him and YOU could have taught him. What two and three year olds need is a mommy and a daddy, not an institution. I think we just have to disagree on this one, but I firmly believe that MY children are MY responsibility, not the schools, not societys, or anyone else. I think we are destroying the whole notion of family, and I think we have bought into the notion that success means everything. It's our way of justifying juggling three jobs and having all sorts of material crap.

I know, I'm ranting. Bad hair day....

sounds eay. you live in a house bought for you by your parents or live in an apartment complex? damn, i have a boat payment, truck payments, morgage payments on my house, vacations, hunting trips and $8,000 in taxes on my 100 acre farm. me and the woman couldn't manage and have money to live comfortably on one income. and i'm not going to, nor would i ask my girl to work nightshift just so somebody can be with my son at home 24/7. grade school isn't any different than a daycare. its just older kids learning more advanced crap. my .02

All parents raise their kids differently. We should respect that you guys. All kids are different too. Some might do better in pre-school and some may not.

Obviously people disagree... and talking about stuff like this can get out of hand really quickly. I STRONGLY suggest that if you'd like to continue the discussion on home school vs school, or the merits of detractions of daycare, that you take it to email or pm.

When good threads go south. My son loved pre school. I live in an area where there are no children so pre school 3 times a week for a few hours was a great play date for him. Everyone has opinions please discuss nicely. Thanks.

I was J/K about my 1st post obviously. My boy is 7 and just started 2nd grade. While in preschool my kid learned sign language. But the number 1 thing he learned was how to interact with other kids. He entered preschool extremely shy and reserved. Today he's much more outgoing and makes friends easily!

Parenting Tips - by LA

How do you increase your childs reading ability? Turn on the closed-caption feature on the TV. They watch Sponge Bob anyway, they know all the lines by heart. Now have them read along with the words.

Wife made fun of me when I did this until the son's teacher remarked to her about his reading ability improving greatly over the previous few weeks.

Just to set the record straight:

I own a small home on 10 acres I bought myself for $125,000 - no help from anyone.

The fact is, you have CHOSEN the mortgage payment you have, you have CHOSEN to have truck payments, you have CHOSEN to have a boat payment, you have CHOSEN all those expenses. You COULD live on one income, but you have CHOSEN a lifestyle that requires more income, and, in so doing, you have CHOSEN to value that lifestyle higher than being home with your child. Why do people get so mad when the obvious is stated?

All I'm saying is that far too many have made that same decision, and so we have a generation of children being raised by institutions.

Why? Selfish materialism.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I disagree 100% with ya benchpress. I have plenty of things to say but I wont, because it might be construed as offensive. I wish some people would have the courtesy of keeping degrading opinions to themselves.

Benchpress-59lbs - your pretty funny - Why are you here?
You should join the "radical, head up your ass" board down the road.

EDIT:
I just read a few of your older posts not much interesting except for the one you asked about building your first cycle. In that post you sounded like you did your homework and even had a brain. So I am not sure why you had to jump in here on a post that was about a special day that most parent enjoy with their family (first day of school in case you forgot) and toss in your opinion in a way that slams everyone else. I think its great that you feel like you are doing something good for your kids. And having a few more sheltered, deprived kids with no social skills only makes it easier for our children to succeed - hay someone has to clean the toilets at the zoo.

OK, I agree, it was a poor thread to go on a rant, especially on this topic. (See, I'm not entirely unreasonable).

I have 6 kids, as I earlier wrote. I am a teacher. I have also worked with over 200 kids with learning disabilities in a private practice. So, this is a "hot button" topic for me. I see way too many suburban folks so carried away with their jobs and their lives, and the kids are the ones to suffer. Kids need parents, not entertainment and TV and institutions. And it is *HARD* to get that message out to suburbia, where having the latest car and the biggest house and nicest boat and most expensive cruise is what so many people live for.

How about just paying attention to your own kid?

I honestly did not mean to address my comments to a *particular* board member - I was pissing in the wind, ranting about a societal problem in general.

So, while I believe in every word I wrote, I am sorry if indivdiuals were hurt,

On the other hand, if someone needed to read those words to change their parenting approach...well, the hell I receive back is worth it

:)

I know you're not serious here, just doing a little rhetorical battle....but just to correct the misperceptions, homeschooled students actually score higher on every standardized test in every state in the US than public schoooled kids. That shouldn't surprise anyone: every educator knows that one on one teaching is the most effective.

My own kids play piano, community soccor and basketball, violin, ride horses in equestrian events, sing in a chorus, dance in a troupe, have had parts in community plays, volunteer at a community kitchen, etc. Hardle sheltered.

Homeschooled students are accepted into the military at higher positions than high school grads. As a rule, they are socialized *better* than many public schooled students. That is because they interact with people of all ages (just like real life), instead of begin separated by age as in a school setting. Those students do NOT become "socialized" - they become "Peer Dependent," and they subjugate their own opinion and behavior to that of the group.
