Passive Behavior
I recently observed a person I work with exhibiting some very passive behavior. This individual is almost always passive, but this is of particular interest to this paper. The situation started out when this individual (a manager) asked another employee (under him) to do go and clean the bathrooms. The individual stated that he would do it in a few minutes. The manager said that was fine and went on his way. Well, come a few hours later the bathrooms were still not clean and the manager asked the employee why he didn’t clean the bathrooms. The employee stated he did not have time yet. Again the manager said ok to this. Meanwhile a customer complained to the General Manager who is this particular manager’s boss. The General Manager yelled at the lower manager and wrote him up. The manager instead of making the employee clean now has received a write up for his work. Sometimes passive behavior does not pay.
Assertive Behavior
Two weeks ago I watched a man in a customer service line use assertive behavior. The man had bought the wrong shelf for his trailer that he was going camping with. The customer service employee told the man that without the receipt he would not be able to exchange the shelf. The man looked the employee straight in the eyes and then preceded to point out that the stores policy stated no receipt was necessary. The clerk gave him an exchange.
Aggressive Behavior
At a soccer game I witnessed a father showing some very aggressive behavior. The referee of the game made a call the father disagreed with and the father ran up to the referee and yelled right into his face. When the referee did not change his call the father pushed the referee and told his a few choice words. This is a perfect example of aggressive behavior.
