I am coaching basketball

this year again for my son.

Since I had the most miserable record (1-11) in the league, anyone know where I could learn a little more about how to teach BB to a bunch of 11 year olds?

First off, I know zip about the sport, second, bear in mind that the attention span of an 11 year in a gym at night after a day in school is measured in nano seconds. Most of my coaching time was spent getting them to stop raising the backboard up and down with another kid hanging on the rim (I told them that didn't count as a dunk).

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions, let me know. As an aside, they are not allowed to play zone yet, it's man for man coverage only.

go to your libarary, there is a great book called Coaching Youth Basketball, can't remember the author, but should be just what you need.

teach them the damn bounce pass, bench any little shit head that is throwing behind the back passes!

PS if they can only play man d, use a pick and roll heavely in your offense, if you have a good point guard, it is almost unstoppable.

Thanks Harvey, TOOO TRUE, I told one kid last year if he did another fade away jumper that missed and didn't have a major sneaker contract, he'd better not come to practice anymore.

Most of these kids are too funny the way they play, everyone's MJ, with attitude, no less!

Right you are on the pic & roll, I got killed with that a lot from all the other coaches last year.

At age 11 their ability to grasp the game is actually very high. I coach HS football and club level soccer and by age 9 most boys/girls will bve able to listen and apply what is taught.

coaching youth basketball is very tough now, I help with a summer bb camp, and am taking over as the coach of my old high school in a year or 2. all these kids watch is guys like alan iverson, mcgrady, kobe, and 1 tapes, etc. they try to immulate them, and don't have the talent.

the damn bounce pass is a lost art, nobody knows how to feed the post anymore. kids shoot fade aways when it is not necessary, stupid crossover dribbles and they aren't even good ball handlers, no defence, so much walking and carrying.

now if you could just convince them that john stockton, kevin mchale, and bird were as cool, as the new thug players of today.

sorry for the rants, but this is a pet peeve, it is ruining basketball. i guess you can tell i was always coached by really old school coaches.

Got your back on this one Harvey, I like to see all the basics in place first, then the kid can be a playa. Nothing more frustrating to watch a kid try to emulate his hero without the skills, they don't understand yet that they need to practice skills everyday.

LOl i guess we get dumber as we grow older i mean it took a week to teach this blonde i know how to play pool decenly enough so that i don't take all the balls in a row and iám not even that good at it :p

Let them do shooting drills. Make them give your respect. Make them do cone drills. Make them do passing drills. Yep bro look it up in the library or find another coach to talk to. It can be fun if you let it. I taught bb to 11 year olds when I worked at the YMCA

Did any of those 11 year old surive to tell the tale ????:p
tkae it easy on em morgan adn remeber they are in it for the fun and the hot naked cheerleaders...........wait they'r only eleven they are doing it to get a shot at getting the hot naked cheerleaders :D

I've coached 7th graders for a couple of years and some frosh H.S.ers, if you want to know some good drills, basic for that 11-13 year olds, drop me a PM, and I'll put together a good 2 hour practice for you, or however long it is you practice. How many practices do you have a week? Sorry if I didn't read this in a previous response, but is this your second year coaching?
