Plates with numbers in or out

Why do guys feel they need to have the weight plates with the numbers in - did I miss something...?

How do you do it and why!

Back in the early 80's when I started out I was told to put the numbers in because the plates were less apt to spin that way.

If you had a 45 with the numbers out and added a 25 after it with the numbers out, the 25 would be more apt to spin. So I was told.

Anyone else???

Numbers in....If not bad things will happen. There will be caos in the world. Cat's and dog's will be cohabitating. The sky will fall.

I don't know why that's just the way it must be. We have wights at my gym made by Ivanko and some by gold's and I have to make sure if I use an Ivanko on on side Ivanko goes on the other or it offends my sence of balance. Just wierd habits I guess.

Just as sure as the earth spins upon its axis, so must the plates be put on NUMBERS IN!
It is the only acceptable way to do it.
And it is also unacceptable to use the 2-1/2's for anyting more than plate spacers.

This is so true KR! That's why U R the massive 1!

my gym has the rubber caoted plates. numbers on both sides.

now i'm confused...numbers in and out!

arrggghhhh!

Physics 101.

Placing the flat side out (numbers in) will situate the mass off the plate furthest from the pivot point (center of the bar) - this increases the moment of inertia of the bar and reduces its tendency to tip to one side or another. Not a big difference unless you've got a lot of plates on there...

SO your all full of shit and nobody knows why we do this?

I'm going back to the Plastic sand filled weights since they had number on both side - Did I just "date" myself?

Full of shit? I think Randy hit the nail on the head. Very good reasoning if you ask me.

You know Randy, every time I want to use your name I think to shorten your username. But I don't, I know better, lol

For me, I just work out with elastic bands and empty milk jugs filled with sand. I haven't put numbers on the jugs yet 'cause I'm not sure how much they weigh.

I put the numbers to the outside tonight and it started snowing real hard. I promptly switched them back and apologized for causing the sky to start falling.

Wouldn't be the first time someone abbreviated it like that.. LOL. (Happens more often that people mentioning that the know what it refers to...)

This was an explanation I've heard from several powerlifters (although they weren't so fancy-schmancy about the physics of it LOL)

Jay, have you tried using canned beans and corn?... They have the weight right there on the bottom of the label... LOL

Well, not that I'm anal-retentive or anytrhing like that but if I grab a bench or rack where someone has left the bar loaded, and they are numbers out, I will take the plates off and switch them around.
We all need to believe in something, and like a kid with Santa, I need to keep my blind faith that the numbers MUST go IN!

This is good, it's not just me!

Whew.

Well, at my old gym, I noticed that the "brothers" there would not mix plates (between York and Champion), they all had to be the same relative color AND numbers IN. Anything else and they wouldn't lift!

Also, they didn't like the bench (bar) not being aligned with the ceiling overhead. They would stop unload the bar (if nessecary) and recenter the bench, reload the bar and lift.

So, every now and again I would simply filp a plate when they were not looking or just bump the bench a little. Always good for a laugh.

However, I find my self doing EXACTLY the same thing in Gold's....but I am NOT alone!

Cheers,

JB

Hey the bench must be strait.... I make sure I strait with the wall and the plates on both sides match.
I think it's called obsessive compulsive disorder. We all have it.:D

We all have quarks with the weights it's Funny. I've seen guys go back and fix them if someone loaded the bar wrong.

Yes, Numbers in here and same type of weights, don't mix, but I'm obssesive compulsive anyway.
