Athletes or Bodybuilders??

Okay before you start ranting about how bodybuilders are athletes let me explain. I wanted to see how many of you guys are competitive and talented in other sports as well. I know bodybuilding is super challenging and hard but i also feel there is a huge different between bodybuilding and sports.

Do you compete in any other sports / or did you before ?
If so what level of play ??

Do you feel bodybuilding hinders or helps that ?

bodybuilding and athletic performance are kinda orthogonal to one another. the things that make you a good bodybuilder -- narrow waist, small joints, full muscle bellies, nice shape, etc. -- are very different from the things that make you a good athlete, such as good tendon attachments, long limbs, being mentally and physically agile.

occasionally you'll get an individual who's blessed with both. more often you'll get someone who's blessed with one or the other who deludes himself into thinking it naturally translates. if i had a dollar for every pro football player who could "be a bodybuilder right now if i wanted to," or bodybuilders who think they can be powerlifters...

personally, i don't have a prayer of being an athlete. i'm 5'5" anyway, and carting around this much mass only makes things far worse. walking to the grocery store gives my tibialis muscles a painful pump and i need to sit down.

i am an athlete before a bodybuilder. i weight train to make my athletic performance better. looks & size are secondary and just a benefit of off-season training.

I've fished in the B.A.S.S. Federation for over 6 years and my back gets sore as hell from standing while casting 9 hours straight. My reflexes are slower, and the boat doesn't go as fast.

Well obviously my sport and bbing don't go together. If I had to run down the feild now I would keel over. Thats why I was 140 until about 3-4 yrs ago when I quit playing college soccer. I loved the sport, but much happier with physical appereance now, plus I cut my damn hair when I quit playing, so I look more presentable now, lol.

I was a full scholarship athlete for football at Boston College then became a bodybuilder and also compete in that now that I cant play sports much anymore, lol, cause im older slower and pissed the fuck off when I cant catch those little deer they breed these days to play ball, lol

Started lifting weights for sports. Played pretty much every sport there is football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer. Now just lift to get big and look good!

Well, i used to be a boulder comps, and mtb races. I also played soccer for 10 years and was a subseeded runner.

Im "built" like an athlete, tall and thin with long limbs but am too clumsly to take advantage of it.

i.e.... I can run but cant catch the ball.

So I started lifting since it doesn't require as much coordination if you think about it. Weight goes up and goes down, thats about it. Usually you sit/stand in one spot. Easy enough.

I played varsity basketball in college. And i played competitive basketball soccer and volleyball in highschool. I played on an all guys basketball team for the ontario basketball association when i was in public school up til grade 10 cause we didnt have a school team. Im a sports a holic.

Used To Be A Competetive Triathlete.

Just for fun now since I can't compete with this much muscle. I could only be competative in Triathlons if I was back down to around 150 Pounds instead of 185 - 190.

Last Summer I Was At 155 Pounds So I Was Light Enough To Compete. I'm up to 185 now and there is no way I could be a competative Triathlete at this weight or higher. I had to make a decision, did I want to be a Triathlete and stay small and light? Or did I want Big Muscles. Well, I made my decision and put on 30 pounds over the past 8 months.

That's the problem weight lifters have to deal with if they also play sports which require a lot of cardio & endurance.

Everyone came from somewhere though. I think 90% of the population played a sport at one time or another during school, high school or just growing up.

I've tried it all, Hockey, Basketball, Tennis, Swimming, Figure Skating (parents enrolled me when i was young, don't ask), Baseball, T-ball, and I sucked at all of them, lmao. I DID however play Rugby a couple times with 30 of my buddies who play Rugby and I trampled them, lol We tore up the field at a local school so much from playing Rugby for hours that their was a right up in the paper about it! LMFAO It got intense, lol. But to answer your question nope, no sports for me right now, I would like to try competing as a powerlifter someday though.

Right now I play college football. Nothing big just a small DIII school. I love the sport tho. I lift to become a better football player. Which basically means bulking all the time and getting as strong as possible. When I'm done playing football my workouts will change to better sculpt my body.

I played football and boxed for a while in high school.

I still play some sports, but not really competitively anymore. I lost a lot of weight when i boxed (I was just naturally too muscular and they made me cut). After several months, i couldn't take it anymore and had to quit.

I was good at both, but not good or big enough to play college ball. Damn!

Semi-pro football. Not nearly as good as I was when I was much smaller. You'd think it would be the other way around. I'm not as fast side to side as I used to be. If I get my hands on someone, that's a different story though. The only theing that has improved is my blocking and my ability to throw a blocker off me.

I played soccer for 14 years. I was also a kicker for my high school football team for two years. I started lifting weights in high school for sports. I started lifting again in college and still do now. It is one of the more enjoyable parts of my day. I would probably be a little slower on the soccer field but I think I would do okay.

I played varsity basketball all through high shcool. I also played softball until high school once you get to high school the girls on the softball teams are kinda scary. I also played field hocky until I moved to Arizona from New Jersey. I guess they don't play field hocky here. When I played basketball I was in the best shape of my life. If I had time and somewhere to play now I would. Basketball you run the whole time so I didn't want to be too heavy because that slows you down, so I was very muscular but not too big either. Not that I was big by any means, I was 5'7" 125lbs and very lean. I had to be quick I was a shooting guard.
