a buddy of mine is going to the beach friday and wants to barrow my made in germany video and he has one of those portable dvd players.my question to u all is the video system says ntsc and not pal,do you think it will play in his system or what?they say that most all dvd players worldwide will play both formats but i dont know about that, thats why i'm asking u all?its kind of off the subject of gear but then again not really........help would be greatly appreciated!

DVDs don't normally use the PAL or NTSC formats so they should play any dvd. They do, however, have region codes embedded in them. If you have a U.S. disc (that is region 1), it may not play in a European system for example because of the region code. Most of the time this is because it is an old player. Most new players will play it regardless of the region. Computers are another matter. They will play the disc, but you have to change the region code to do so--and you can only do that about five times, after which it will be locked into a region. Brasil is region 4, and I have three dvds from down there. I can play them without any problems on my dvd player at home, but I can no longer play them on my computer because it is locked into region code 1.

Bump Tkemp,...just make sure it says region 1 on the dvd, and if it does say NTSC which stands for National Television systems committee which is used alot in the U.S and some other countries...I think it should work if only your dvd says region 1...
