Question about "dirt?"

Whenever I notice a small amount of dirt underneath my fingernails I tend to scrape it out, that's a given.

But my question is, why does the dirt smell like shit, like actual feces shit?

I just don't ever recall a time or place where I've been scraping my nails at shit logs? It's a mystery to me.

Accumulated sweat combined with dirt is what that is from. Sweat is a waste product. Combine that with lots of bacteria and you get the feces smell.

There are two types of sweat glands, eccrine and appocrine. Eccrine sweat doesn't have an odor because it mainly only contains water and salt. Appocrine sweat is the sweat that stinks like shit or bad body odor because along with excreting water and salt, they also excrete fat, which like Tony said, combines with bacteria and causes the odor. Skin bacteria actually feed on the fat and cause the bad odor as they decompose. The main places that appocrine glands are found are armpits, groin and feet, but its possible to have them in the hands as well, hence your shit smell! LOL!! I actually got this information from MD so take it for what its worth! :thumbsup:

Just the mental picture of someone sitting there picking shit from under their nails and slowly raising it to their upper lip and giving it a little sniff or two made my day.
