how much protien can you actually use?

I was wondering how much protien you could actually take in at one time, and say you eat one meal with 40g's of protien..how long do you have to wait until you can take in more, cause i def. dont want to waste protien intake..i weigh only 148 so obviously i cant take as much protien in as someone who is 250 pds, so what would be a good guess on that?

They say it's about 30 grams in one sitting for an average male. Those are probably males who don't eat like we eat, but are probably a bit bigger than 148lbs.

I'd rec 30 as a good mark for you.

As far as digestion, you want to give yourself about 3 hours to digest properly, 2 and a half at minimum.

so i just ate about a 30mg meal about na hour ago, so i couldnt drink a 32g protien shake until like an hour to take in all the protien?

yeah, but everyone's different.

what do they say for bulking, 1.5 grams per pound? You're 148X1.5=about 225

if you're doing 30gramsX7 meals is only 210 grams. See how complicated things can be? 7 meals is reasonable with giving you 6+hours sllep with no meal.

What do you guys say?

JayWooly answered it best the only other factor I would throw in there is if you workout inbetween meals you could probably take in another 30 - 40 grams before the 3 hours are up... for instance I eat a small breakfast when I wake up but probably 20 -30grams of Pro. About 30 minutes later I run and hit cardio for 30 - 60 minutes. When I'm done I'm ready for a shake... Mind you I don't do this all the time but by this theory I've taken in 2 servings of Protein approxiamately 90 minutes apart

Just drink the protein anyways. Regardless if your body will use them in one way or another. Some will be used for repairing muscle the left overs will be used for calories. They just don't disappear if your body isn't digesting them how we want.

thank you BiggerStronger.

Alot of people, even guys on the boards, don't understand this.

They think they are "wasting" protein. That's like saying you eat a fattening cheeseburger, but only digest half the fat and waste the other half. I wish! No, it goes right to your gut or lovehandles.

I say overdo the protein, just to be safe. You're body can't store protein for the purposes of musclebuilding.

Oh Crap! Superman...PLEASE don't tell me you're saying take as much protein as he wants!! That can harm you!!!

Bigworm, If you want to gain size as in bodybuild you want to have 15% fat in your diet, 30% protien, and 55% carbs.

If you mainly want strength you need 20% fat, 25% protien, and 55% carbs

If you are training for more aerobic sports you need 25% fat, 15% protein, and 60% carbs

PLEASE never, never, NEVER exceed your protien intake. If you down more than you can burn you cause serious problems. And all at once?!?!

It's like water...if you down all your water for the day within a half hour...well...for one you have to piss and you have to piss bad. But besides, that man, you're hurting your kidneys majorly! It's too hard on them.

Same for protein...you may not feel the effects, but they're there and they're not pretty.

Protein is very important for muscle gain. The more you build the more protein you need for your body to repair itself. But if you over do it will not only hurt your kidneys as it tries to filter out the excess you put in your body, but also your liver which also tries to filter out the extra protien. Be careful!

Tell me what your activity is and I will give you an idea of what your protein intake should be. Are you a heavy lifter daily, moderate lifter, heavy lifter plus sports daily, sports athlete, jogging, or just fitness exercising?

Thanks!

Well if you're consuming a lot of protein you should also consume a good amount of water throughout the day. Someone 200lbs should be eating around 300-350g protein for good results I believe. It also depends on what your goals are...cutting people go very low on carbs and very high in protein and moderate fat. Excessive amounts of protein can be harmful if you don't drink much water...It should be up around 1-1.5 gallons per day - spread out of course.

ok, im 5'9, 148pds, around 8-9% b/f, and im trying to bulk up, its hard as hell for me to gain weight. No sports, just trying to pack on some pounds, not all fat though. I have not takin many cycles, two test only cycles awhile back, none recently, starting one in 3 days though :). 300mgs deca, 400mgs test, 30-35 mg's of d-bol. and for the heavy lifter or whatever, not really sure what ya mean, work out bout 4 times a day umm... not sure what else, in my mind im a freackin hardcore lifter, but then again i only 148 pds, lol so its def. hard to pack on the pounds, but there ya, se if yall can help me out, thanks a lot guys

First things first BigWorm! I read and watch anything on bodybuilding whenever possible. And one time I watched a biography on this huge man in his late 20's early 30's who was a very, very puny teen. He showed old photos...and he looked like one of those kids you see in a chess club puny.

He bulked up over the years all from lifting! He was an all natural lifter and he looked great! So, keep your head high, man, because you're not far from your own biography either!!

About the protein it sounds like you are a heavy lifter, so, based on all your information you should be consuming 135 grams of protein a day. If you go a little under or a little over your protein intake you will be okay. But many lifters screw up and either don't have nearly enough or they over do the protein. Whatever you do, please, please, PLEASE be careful. And do NOT overdose on vitamins either.

My father was a bodybuilder and he quit shortly after he started raising me. When I picked up the sport he started telling me about his old days. I was amazed...and figured out where I get my passion for my lifting.

A couple years later me dad started to pick it up again. Then something crapy happened. He ended up in the hospital for vitamin overdose...it was killing his liver. God saved that man, because he could have permanently destroyed his liver...resulting in death. Man, don't listen to people who don't know what they are talking about...your life could and will be at stake.

Take care...and if you or anyone has some questions e-mail me. If I don't know the answer I will find it or point you in the right direction for the answer to your question. [email protected]

you're working out 4 times a day!!?!?!?!?!
That my friend is why you are not packing on the lbs. as you say. You are not giving your body enough time to heal and grow.

Angel - I know what you're trying to say, but you're causing too much alarm in regards to protein. Only those who 1. have existing kidney problems 2. drink little water 3. consume extremely high amounts of protein 500-600+grams for long peroids of time without breaks should worry about causing kidney problems or making them worse.

I would say bare minimum 1.5g per pound of body weight for bodybuilding. 135g of protein is only 540 calories. If you use so little protein you'll have to consume 2500+ calories on fat and carbs. That to me doesn't sound very healthy. As long as you drink plenty of water 300g of protein wont cause damage...and if you're worried just get periodic blood tests (which everyone should get anyways) to confirm your health.
